GREAT AMERICAN DREAM MACHINE, THE: HIGHLIGHTS {PROGRAM A} (TV)

Summary

One in this award-winning series that combines a variety of short features, satirical sketches and musical interludes under the all-embracing theme of American social and cultural issues. This is one of six programs that feature a compilation of highlights from the 1971-1972 season. A profile of motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel includes interviews with Knievel and his doctor, as well as a slow-motion film clip of his devastating crash while attempting to jump over the fountain in front of Caesar's Palace; consumer advocate Marshall Efron takes a humorous look at the USDA's peculiar grading system as he investigates the issue of size in "The Olive Question"; "Portrait of the Artist," an animated short, tells the story of an operatic pig with creative aspirations whose patrons are more interested in his ham than his singing ability; "Crasheroo" examines America's love of destruction and violence, as typified by participants and spectators at a crash derby; a segment on America's love of romance begins with a look at computer dating and finishes with a trip to a honeymoon hotel that features round beds and heart-shaped bathtubs; "Abraham and Isaac," an animated version of the biblical story, is narrated in song by Pete Seeger; Ken Shapiro is a wacky meteorologist in "Great American Weather Days"; "You Know Who and What's His Name" parodies the French cinema, with Bob Dishy and Salome Jens as a pair of disaffected lovers; and a profile of singer Nina Simone includes performance clips and portions of an interview.
