CBS NEWS SPECIAL, A: 48 HOURS ON CRACK STREET (TV)

Summary

This investigative report examines the growing incidence of crack use in New York City. Over the course of 48 hours, a team of correspondents visits the streets of Manhattan and its surrounding boroughs and suburbs to conduct hard-hitting interviews with drug users, law enforcement officials, and concerned citizens. The program features graphic footage of the many ravaging physical and social effects of the drug. Segments include the following: Bernard Goldberg reports on "The Streets"; Dan Rather visits a crack den in "The 34th Precinct" and meets "The Addict's Families" and "The Residents" of Washington Square Park; Diane Sawyer investigates crack use in "New Jersey Suburbs"; in "Emergency," Dr. Robert Arnot visits emergency care units as they treat overdose victims; Richard Roth looks at white collar addiction in "The Professionals"; and Harold Dow visits the Drug Enforcement Administration in "With the D.E.A." Next is a segment entitled "Heros," in which Ed Bradley reports on recovering addicts who talk to children about staying off drugs, such as former major league pitchers Doc Ellis and Steve Howe. Among the topics addressed are the easy availability and low price of crack; causes of addiction; criminals and drugs; the inability to curb the drug epidemic; and the role that parents can play in solving the drug problem. Other segments include the following: Dave Martin reports on the drug enforcement operations of military AWACS Airplanes in "Watching the Skies"; Goldberg reports on "The Dealers," as well as repeat offenders in "We'll Be Back"; Rather talks with families of addicts about "Danger Signs" of drug addiction and interviews Mayor Ed Koch in "Politics"; Dr. Robert Newman treats an overdose victim in "Eugene: $5 Overdose"; Bob Faw investigates "The Treatment Centers"; Bob Schieffer looks at "The Courts"; and Bill Moyers offers "A Commentary." Additional program highlights include Goldberg being threatened by a pusher wielding a broken bottle; scenes from Samaritan Village Inc. and other treatment centers; shots of neighborhoods littered with drug paraphernalia; and Rather interviewing staff members at Beth Israel Medical Center. Among the topics addressed are the federal government's efforts to control the drug problem; drug pushers' lack of fear about the consequences of illegal activities; and addicts who seek help and are turned away due to inadequate funding for drug treatment programs. Includes commercials and Channel 2 Newsbreaks.
