CIVIL WAR, THE, EPISODE 8: 1865: WAR IS ALL HELL (TV)

Summary

The eighth episode in this nine-part documentary about the American Civil War, narrated by David McCullough. Subtitles include "Sherman's March," "The Breath of Emancipation," "Died of a Theory," "Washington, March 4, 1865," "I Want to See Richmond," and "Appomattox." Included are appearances by writer Shelby Foote, historian Ed Bearss, and former Congressman James Symington. Events covered include William T. Sherman's march on Georgia and South Carolina, Ulysses S. Grant's seizing of Petersburg, and the evacuation and Union takeover of Richmond. Abraham Lincoln (Sam Waterston) is inaugurated once again and travels first to Grant's floating headquarters, The River Queen, to confer with his generals, then later with his son Tad to occupied Richmond. The decline of the Confederacy is examined, including the deteriorating living conditions of its citizens and soldiers, a degenerating government, the final abolishment of slavery with the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, and final defeat in the war. The program concludes with Robert E. Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox, Virginia. Other topics include descriptions of the condition of escaped Union prisoners-of-war who had been in Andersonville Prison; the failed kidnapping attempt of Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth and accomplices; and the post-surrender celebration in Washington, D.C. Also included are the reflections of Mary Chesnut and a portion of Lincoln's inauguration speech.
