DEXTER: IT'S ALIVE! {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The second season premiere in this crime thriller series, based on the books by Jeff Lindsay, about a forensics expert for the Miami-Dade Police who also happens to be a serial killer targeting criminals that the police can't bring to justice. In this episode, Dexter grows increasingly antsy as, prevented from attending to his "nighttime job" by Doakes' watchful eye, he spends his time bowling with his co-workers. He finally manages to evade the suspicious sergeant and captures Jimmy Senseo, a voodoo priest who has been poisoning people with ricin to prove that his "curses" work, but is alarmed to find that he cannot bring himself to execute the man. Frustrated, he returns home to Deb, who has been staying at his apartment ever since Rudy/Brian's attempt on her life, and he recalls a similar incident from his teen years in which Harry reminded him that he must exercise control over his urges. Dexter again finds himself unable to "perform" during some private time with Rita, and Doakes continues monitoring his behavior at work and elsewhere. Deb returns to the precinct, though LaGuerta warns Pascal that Deb is not yet ready for field work.

The team is summoned to a crime scene at which a man with gang tattoos has been killed with a machete, and Deb tries to ignore an onlooker who recognizes her as "Mrs. Ice-Truck Killer." The victim's mother, Eva, rushes onto the scene and reveals that he was killed by a "Little Chino," hysterically begging Dexter to "kill him like a dog" – and Dexter, recognizing himself in Eva's young daughter, vows to do just that. Rita takes the kids to visit Paul in jail, and he again begs for her help in finding the telltale shoe and exonerating him. Dexter is pleased to learn that the killer fits his Code, having evaded justice by murdering witnesses against him, though when "Little" Chino arrives, they see that he is anything but. In the past, teenage Dexter marvels at Harry's ability to feel fear when Dexter almost accidentally shoots him, and when Eva's credibility as a witness is damaged by her past drug charges, Dexter happily concludes that he can kill Chino after all. Elsewhere, however, several divers make a shocking discovery in the bay. Dexter arranges for Rita and Deb to spend some "girl time" together as he heads out "bowling," and while working late at the office, LaGuerta spots Pascal fighting with her fiancé, whom she believes to be cheating on her. Paul calls Rita, swearing that he "won't make it" in prison, and she angrily reveals that while she did indeed find the shoe, she will not sacrifice her relationship with Dexter to get him out of jail, given his long history of abuse against her.

Dexter tracks down Little Chino and drags him back to Jimmy's abandoned shop, but the massive Chino manages to fight him off and escape the table. Deb and Rita bond over their extremely disappointing lovers, with Deb admitting that it is possible to miss "how he made you feel" despite their terrible actions. Clearly still deeply traumatized by her fiancé's betrayal, she ends up attacking a man who seemingly recognizes her at the bar. Harry is shocked when teenage Dexter climbs onto the edge of a roof, desperate to "feel alive," and when Dexter arrives at Rita's after his failure with Little Chino, he finds her in tears and learns that Paul was killed in a fight in prison. Back at home, Dexter is stunned when Deb excitedly shows him a news report explaining that dozens of dismembered corpses have been found in trash bags in the bay, and though Deb sees the new case as a chance to "find some peace," Dexter is amazed to find that he can indeed experience terror.
