PUSHING DAISIES: WATER AND POWER (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy-based dramedy series about a pie-maker whose touch can revive the dead. In this episode, in a flashback, young Emerson repeatedly makes trouble at school in order to spend time with his crush, Principal Swindle. In the present, Randy Mann visits Olive and Ned and Chuck discuss their support of their relationship and Olive's happiness, but are surprised when Olive abruptly ends things with Randy. They intervene, but Ned's clumsy advice then prompts Olive to reconsider Randy merely as a rebound from her feelings for Ned. Elsewhere, Emerson reunites with dog-training girlfriend Simone, and is then hired to solve the murder of power plant owner Roland Stingwell, whom Emerson knows of old, and the theft of his prized ruby. When Emerson questions Stingwell at the morgue with Ned's help, Stingwell accuses him of stealing his woman and names Lila Robinson as his murderer. Emerson admits that Lila is the woman in question and the mother of his missing daughter, as well as a "wily genius," but Ned and Chuck urge him to find her to both solve the case and locate young Penny. It is revealed that, years ago, Emerson was hired to tail Stingwell's fiancée but found himself falling for the woman, and she admitted to being a grifter, planning to steal Stingwell's money and his ruby. After falling pregnant with Emerson's child, Lila stole $50,000 from Stingwell and vanished.
The detectives tour Stingwell's dam and learn that all visitors are photographed for security. They find evidence of Lila entering and leaving around the time of the murder, but Stingwell's assistant reveals Stingwell's contract to replace leaky pipes around the plant and adds that a factory has secretly dumped harmful chemicals in the reservoir, creating more suspects. Emerson encounters Detective Puget and requests his help in catching Lila, but Lila soon turns up at Emerson's office and states her innocence. She offers to let him see Penny in exchange for his clearing her name, but Simone is upset at Emerson's secrecy and leaves. Randy worries that Olive is indeed using him, and Ned observes that love can make one desperate. They interview a number of farmers, including one Michael Brunt, who lost access to water because of Stingwell's dam, but he too seems innocent. Stumped, they revisit the assistant's claim and learn that the factory did in fact dump chemicals into the water, but while the evidence still points only to Lila as the killer, Emerson refuses to accept her guilt. Simone returns and interrogates Lila, suspecting that Penny is a bluff, and when Lila runs, Ned and Chuck hide out in her trunk, though she soon catches them.
Olive and Randy decide to pursue a genuine relationship after all, and Emerson gets an idea when he discovers that Stingwell's leaky pipes were located near Brunt's farm, providing his farm with free, though chemically-enhanced, water. Emerson explores the hidden passages in the pipes and finds the ruby hidden there, realizing that Brunt, disguised as Lila for the photo, killed Stingwell by flooding the pipes in order to keep his free water. Brunt, returning to fetch the jewel, attempts to kill Emerson and Simone in the same way, but they manage to escape and Brunt is caught by Chuck and Ned. With her name cleared, Lila brings Penny to meet Emerson, and Emerson states that he wants to take a turn in raising her long-term. Lila cons him, however, and takes his car, and he gets only a brief glimpse of Penny in the backseat as she drives away. He then learns that his pop-up book "L'il Gumshoe" is to be published, however, and hopes it will help bring his daughter back to him. Includes commercials and promos.
