DETROIT 1-8-7: SHELTER (TV)

Summary

One in this series of police dramas about the Detroit Police Department's leading homicide unit. In this episode, Washington confides to Stone that he is frustrated by his lack of intimacy with his wife since the birth of their child. The detectives are surprised to meet naive young administrative intern Wendy Chapin-Lomeister, and they are soon called to a crime scene at which two decayed bodies have been found in the basement of a building that burned down during the infamous 1967 race riots. The victims appear to have scrawled a hopeful message for the future on the wall before dying, and Longford realizes that they are in fact Heather Malansky and Richard Henderson, an interracial teen couple whose disappearance and presumed elopement made local headlines back in the sixties. Elsewhere, Sanchez and Stone investigate the death of one Amparo Lopez, whose body is found in a lot. The coroner determines that Richard and Heather did not die in the fire but were beaten to death inside their hidden "love den," and Stone and Sanchez are startled to hear that Amparo gave birth to a full-term infant shortly before her death.

Washington is embarrassed when the other detectives begin weighing in on his marital troubles, and Amparo's boss explains that she was undocumented and was seeing a colleague, Luis Pena. The detectives break the bad news to Richard and Heather's family members, and Richard's mother and brother Eddie suggest that a local troublemaker, Toledo Harris, was involved in their deaths. Harris, in prison, in turn blames Reverend Clinton Huey, suggesting that he led a life of crime before turning to religion. Stone and Sanchez track down Luis and find that he has the baby, but he swears that the infant was left on his doorstep and seems shocked to learn that Amparo is dead. Roy Darrow, a retired detective who was in the midst of the Detroit riots, stops by and, noting that he worked alongside Longford's father, points them in the direction of another suspect, Robbie Trenville. Sanchez is offended by Stone's dismissive comments about Amparo's "anchor baby," and they soon learn that she suffered a heart attack caused by a blood clot and was treated by some kind of medical professional shortly before her demise. Reverend Huey states that Richard was a pacifist and was not involved in any violence, though Longford remains suspicious of Huey's own actions during the chaotic period.

Amparo's boss suggests that she attended a secret clinic, too afraid of deportation to visit a state hospital, and Longford finds his estranged father at a bar and attempts to question him about the riots, wondering why he "stooped to the level" of the criminals and used violence against citizens. A distraught Eddie returns to the station house and tries to claim responsibility for Richard and Heather's deaths, but he then clarifies that, fearing trouble for himself and his mother, he told the police about the couple's secret hideout, suggesting that it was a cop who truly murdered the pair. Sanchez visits a local clinic, pretending to be a friend of Amparo's, and when the doctor attempts to flee, the detectives grab her and force her to admit that after Amparo died during surgery, she dumped the body and secretly delivered the baby to its father rather than admit to treating her privately. At the same time, Longford figures out that the message left on the wall by Richard and Heather reads not "1968" but "8961" – Darrow's badge number. They confront him with the fact that "suspect" Robbie was in fact in Vietnam during the riots, but Darrow refuses to talk until Fitch questions him alone, pretending to side with his racist views and his hatred of the "animals" involved in the riot, and Darrow soon admits that his confrontation with Heather and Richard "got away from them." Longford's father visits him at work and finally opens up about that traumatic summer, and Longford soon visits Joey Pacelli, his childhood best friend from whom he was separated because of the racial tension. Stone apologizes to Sanchez for his tactless immigrant comments, and Fitch offers the final word on Washington's personal issue. The detectives agree that the city has grown for the better since the summer of '67, and Longford and Pacelli enjoy a game of basketball together as footage is shown of the riot's widespread destruction. Includes commercials and promos.
