PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: SHE'S MAKING MEDIA: AN EVENING WITH JANE FONDA {LA} {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media’s Inside Media series. This evening features actress Jane Fonda speaking about her long and prolific career. Pat Mitchell (President, C.E.O. of The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before inviting Fonda up to the stage. Topics of discussion include: Fonda’s thoughts on growing older and how she’s dealt with reaching the “third act” of her life; the process of writing her autobiography; how the struggle to defy gender roles played a part in shaping Fonda at an early age; Fonda’s view on her early acting career and how it could be “painful”; how she felt about living in France for ten years and the lessons she learned from it; how she became involved in anti-war activism and how it affected her relationship with her daughter; her visits to Vietnam during the Vietnam War and how the public reacted; her memories about making the film “On Golden Pond” and of working with actress Katharine Hepburn; Fonda’s experience working on the television film “The Dollmaker” and how she arrived at the decision to produce it for television rather than for movie theaters; how Fonda started her exercise video business and how it grew far beyond her expectations; Fonda’s thoughts on “feeling young”; what she learned from her marriage to media mogul Ted Turner; Fonda’s reflections on her life upon turning sixty; the low points of her career and how she’s learned from them; her work on behalf of a safe sex advocacy group alongside actress Gabby Sidibe; her feelings about older people serving as “role models” for the young; Fonda’s campaign against abuse of women; her opinions on the power of social media and the internet; her recent experiences at the Cannes Film Festival; and Fonda’s desire to orient her more recent workout videos towards older people. Fonda then reads a selection from her new book “Prime Time” concerning her experience with perimenopause and how she overcame her mid-life crisis. Clips are interspersed throughout, including: several clips from Fonda’s most recent exercise video “Prime Time” (2011); a commercial for Lux soap featuring Fonda (1960); an excerpt from episode of “Person to Person” where Fonda was interviewed by newscaster Edward R. Murrow (1960); an excerpt of an interview with Fonda from a French documentary (1963); a clip of Fonda’s appearance on “The Merv Griffith Show” (1967) with then-husband Roger Vadim; a clip from the film “On Golden Pond” (1981) featuring Fonda with her father Henry Fonda; Fonda accepting her father’s Oscar for “On Golden Pond” during the 54th Annual Academy Awards ceremony (1982); a clip from the television film “The Dollmaker” (1984); an excerpt from “Jane Fonda’s Workout” (1982); an excerpt from the documentary “Jane” (1962); and a slideshow of photographs taken by Fonda at the Cannes Film Festival.
