MINDY PROJECT, THE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this comedy series about the life and loves of Dr. Mindy Lahiri, OB-GYN. In this episode, Mindy explains her lifelong love of romantic comedy films and her delight at her cinematic "meet-cute" with another doctor, Tom. After a brief relationship, however, Tom quickly meets and marries someone else, and at the wedding, a drunken Mindy delivers a bitter and inappropriate toast before riding off on a bicycle and landing in a pool, where a Barbie doll instructs her to rethink her life. She is arrested for public intoxication and the police are unmoved by her explanation, and when her best friend Gwen bails her out, they discuss Mindy's need to make changes in her life, including her occasional liaisons with immature fellow doctor Jeremy. Upon receiving a call from the hospital, she hurries to work to find that the abrasive Dr. Danny Castellano has stolen one of her patients and delivered the baby, and he calls her out on her irresponsible behavior, also expressing distaste at her semi-relationship with Jeremy.
Mindy meets a new patient, Nasreen, who speaks no English and has no insurance. Despite her reservations, Mindy takes her on as a patient, admitting that she is bad at saying no. She then models a first-date outfit for her work friends, and though the women approve, Danny says that it will not be appealing to a guy. When she pointedly mentions his divorce, he bluntly comments on her weight, to her outrage. Mindy resists Jeremy's advances and goes on a blind date with Dennis, and though he has heard that she is "dramatic," things go reasonably well until she receives a call from Max, Nasreen's son, and is forced to leave the date and help her patient. Later, she watches "When Harry Met Sally" and Danny questions her about Dennis, asking if he is a real "man," hinting that perhaps he himself is a better match for her. Mindy talks to Gwen and decides that she has made some progress, though she still invites Jeremy over for a late-night rendezvous. Commercials deleted.
