MODERN FAMILY: EXPRESS CHRISTMAS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, on December 16th, Claire and Mitchell's mother Dede cancels on them for Christmas, announcing that she is going out of town with her new boyfriend, and the family realizes that they will not be all together again until after the holiday. Phil excitedly suggests an "express Christmas," sure that they can assemble a sufficient holiday celebration within a few hours' time, and everyone hurriedly divvies up the responsibilities. Claire takes Haley to Target and urges her to use her well-honed shopping skills to get all of the necessary presents, while elsewhere Gloria and Luke fearfully search the spider-infested attic for a certain tree angel made by Dede. Mitchell and Alex bond as they look for the perfect tree, though Jay is annoyed by Cam's overly sentimental gift as they wrap presents together.

Haley employs some less-than-ethical methods to secure Lily's present, and Phil, in charge of grocery shopping, brings a nervous Manny along to meet a shady Craigslist salesman offering an expensive baseball card, which he intends to give to Jay. Manny misunderstands the situations, however, and Phil somehow ends up tazed and turkey-less. Matters grow worse when Gloria destroys both the tree and the angel with her car, and the others attempt to repair the tree and the damaged ornament as Phil arrives with Cornish game hens. Frustrated, everyone seems prepared to give up on "express Christmas," but Gloria suggests that Claire and Mitchell secretly miss Dede and simply need a mother's love to feel better about the holiday. Jay invites everyone for a "Jewish Christmas" at a Chinese restaurant, and Gloria concludes that all one needs for a holiday is the love of one's family as they all play in the (fake) snow provided by Jay. Later, Phil is touched his last-second replacement gift to Jay is a hit. Includes commercials and promos.
