TROPHY WIFE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The pilot of this comedy series about a young woman who becomes a successful lawyer’s third wife, and her struggle to adjust to her new family. Kate is a single girl who wants nothing more than to party before she meets Pete Harrison, an older, successful lawyer after she accidentally injures him at a karaoke bar. At the hospital the two of them bond, and Kate meets the rest of his family: his imposing ex-wife Dr. Diane Buckley and their children, fraternal twins Warren and Hillary, and his second ex-wife Jackie, a New Age spiritualist, as well as their adopted child Bert. Pete asks Kate out on a date and the idea of having a husband and family appeals to Kate. A year later they are married, but Pete’s children have yet to accept Kate as their new stepmother. Kate tries to prove herself by going to a parent-teacher conference about Warren in Pete’s stead. She also has her friend Meg take Bert to his orchestra practice for Jackie. At Warren’s high school, Kate sits down with Warren’s teacher only to be joined by Diane, who believes that the meeting is her responsibility. Meg stops by the bar where she works to pick up her paycheck, leaving Bert in the car, much to his dismay. Jackie breaks into Pete’s house to kidnap his hamster; it is the twin of Bert’s hamster, who just died, and she hopes to replace the dead one with Pete’s so she won’t have to explain what happened to Bert. Warren’s teacher reveals that he has been writing erotic fiction in class, and it seems to be fixated on Kate. Diane is appalled and vows to take action, instructing Kate to stay out of the matter. Bert calls Kate on Meg’s phone to complain that he was left in the car, making Kate furious. When Meg returns, Bert locks her out of her car and blackmails her into buying him a Lego set before letting her back in. Meanwhile, Pete and Jackie argue about the hamsters and accidentally kill the other one. They go to a pet store to try to buy replacements, but the clerk throws them out when he catches sight of one of the dead hamsters in a bag. Kate catches Hillary in her school parking lot with a water bottle full of vodka; she had hoped to sneak it into a concert she was attending. Kate feels responsible since she inadvertently gave Hillary the idea. To stop Diane from finding out about it, Kate chugs the entire bottle at once, leaving her highly intoxicated. Pete proposes to Jackie that they simply tell Bert the truth about his hamster, but Jackie can’t bear to go through with it. Instead they decide to buy him a puppy to distract him, and he is overjoyed. The entire family reconvenes and during the confusion Diane tells Pete about Warren’s erotica. Hillary’s friend Chelsea arrives to pick her up for the concert and Warren makes an awkward attempt to hit on her. Kate realizes that Warren was writing his erotica about Chelsea and not her, and proves it to Diane. She tries to get Diane to apologize to her, but it is clear that she is still intoxicated and Diane is furious, threatening to sue Pete for full custody of her children for his apparent irresponsibility. Hillary quells the argument by admitting the truth about the vodka and apologizing to Kate. As punishment, Pete forbids her to go to the concert, and Warren offers to go with Chelsea instead; surprisingly, she accepts. Later, Kate sobers up and Pete comforts her as she admits that his family situation is somewhat overwhelming, but that she is making progress. Commercials deleted.
