FAKE-OUT {A.K.A. "NEVADA HEAT"} {MOTION PICTURE}
Summary
A comedy film about a nightclub singer placed into police protection so she can testify against her gangster boyfriend.
In Las Vegas, Nevada, a manager, Spiveck, is run over by a mobile home while attempting to direct it out of a parking lot. The occupant, a woman, gets out and kills the man with a shotgun. Meanwhile, at the Riviera casino, nightclub singer Bobbie Warren performs her act. As she gets off stage, a man appears and arrests her, placing her in handcuffs. She is placed in a correctional facility in southern Nevada; she was arrested for refusing to provide testimony to incriminate her boyfriend Parelli in the Spiveck murder. She continues to refuse, thus sending her to prison. Bobbie quickly becomes uncomfortable due to the behavior of the other inmates, who threaten and cajole her. After three months, however, she adjusts, receiving numerous gifts from her boyfriend and leading the other inmates in exercise classes. She narrowly avoids an altercation in the prison exercise yard, but later she is cornered and sexually assaulted in the shower by several inmates while a guard watches from the door. This convinces Bobbie to change her mind and agree to testify against her boyfriend.
Two policemen escort Bobbie out of prison, including the man who arrested her in the first place, Lieutenant Thurston. They plan to put her in a suite at the Riviera over the weekend to protect her until the day of her testimony in court. She is unhappy to learn that Thurston’s partner, Detective Clint Morgan, will be staying with her in the suite. At the casino, Bobbie slips away while Morgan is distracted, and both she and Thurston are unable to resist gambling for a while. They finally get to the room and Bobbie settles in as Thurston informs her that Parelli has gone to New York City and she won’t be seeing him anytime soon. Thurston secretly traps Bobbie in her room by inserting his key into her door and breaking it off. Bobbie tries to sneak out without alerting Morgan, but is unsuccessful. Meanwhile, two hitmen scope out the suite and spy on Bobbie and Morgan. Bobbie teases Morgan and he tries to resist and remain stoic.
Bobbie claims that she needs new clothes, as her current wardrobe smells of the prison facility. She gets permission from Thurston to use Morgan’s money in a blackjack game, hoping to get enough to purchase new clothes. Bobbie does surprisingly well at the blackjack table, much to the frustration of the only other player, an older fellow. She wins a great deal of money before leaving with Morgan. While out shopping for clothes they run into Ted, an overly excitable talent manager, who takes an interest in Bobbie. Ted is there with Michelle, a waitress he “discovered” as an actress and married earlier that day. Ted tells Morgan that he also deals drugs, not realizing that Morgan is a policeman. They leave and are amused by the encounter. Morgan accompanies Bobbie while she is in the bath, and she recounts her experiences in prison. They nearly kiss, but Thurston calls and orders Morgan to bring Bobbie downstairs for dinner. They go down and run into Ted and Michelle again and play keno together. Michelle sends a message to Bobbie by writing the letters “D P” on her keno card, apparently indicating that Ted works for Parelli. Michelle takes Bobbie aside and a man chases them through the casino; they manage to evade him.
As Michelle continues to be chased, Bobbie is reunited with Parelli, leaving her overjoyed. He is suspicious that she actually intended to testify against him and says that he is having his lawyers work on a way to permanently reunite them. Parelli turns out to be the one who hired the hitmen, unbeknownst to Bobbie. Morgan and Thurston run about the casino searching for Bobbie; the man chasing around Michelle was Merrick, another police officer working with Thurston. Morgan nearly captures Michelle and Parelli, but they elude him and try to shoot him down in the casino parking lot. Meanwhile, the hitmen attempt to assassinate Bobbie with a sniper rifle, but they keep missing and she does not notice. Merrick comes to her door and gets her to let him in, but he accidentally takes the bullet meant for her. Morgan continues to chase Ted and Michelle, and they drive their car through the casino, causing chaos. Thurston comes upon Bobbie grieving over Merrick’s body and realizes that Parelli tried to have her killed. Distraught, she agrees to testify against Parelli after all. Morgan shoots Ted, causing his car to careen out of control and land in a swimming pool. Michelle gets away, but Ted’s dead body floats in the pool.
Morgan, Thurston, and Bobbie reunite at the pool and Thurston takes Bobbie away to protect her while Morgan goes after Michelle. He shoots down an assailant trying to shoot him in a hallway. He and Thurston rush to get Bobbie to the police station to protect her, but Parelli’s hitmen intercept them and try to kill them. A car chase ensues, and Thurston manages to get the hitmen to crash their car, thus eluding them. He realizes that the police station would be unsafe and instructs Morgan to take Bobbie to a boat at the local marina owned by his brother-in-law, hoping that she will be safe there. Bobbie and Morgan reach the boat and have a romantic encounter there while the hitmen approach in their own boat, hoping to finish the job. The hitmen shoot up the boat’s cabin with Morgan and Bobbie still inside, and afterward Thurston arrives to find the hitmen’s dead bodies near Morgan and Bobbie. Morgan reveals that they went onto another boat in order to fool the hitmen, and believes that Thurston was attempting to orchestrate Bobbie’s death all along. He reveals that he cooperated with Parelli as a means of paying him back for loans made to alleviate his crippling gambling debt. Morgan realizes that the police will likely not believe him or Bobbie when they tell them about Thurston’s corruption, but fixes this by threatening to bring down Parelli, thus saddling Thurston with his gambling debts again. When more police arrive, Morgan claims that Thurston saved them from Parelli’s hitmen. While walking off, they discover that Bobbie’s keno ticket won big, awarding her over fifty thousand dollars. Thurston tells the other policemen that he will bring in Parelli personally.
