PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST FALL TV PREVIEWS 2014: CBS: SCORPION {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar hosts a preview screening of the pilot of “Scorpion,” a television series about a team of geniuses working to solve crises for the United States government. Host Rene Reyes (director of programs, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing the “Scorpion” pilot, screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, SEE ACCNUM 116188).
Lindsey Bahr (senior writer, Entertainment Weekly) moderates the following panelists: executive producer and creator Nick Santora; executive producers Nicholas Wootton, Walter O’Brien, Alex Kurtzman, Scooter Braun, and Heather Kadin; and cast members Ari Stidham (Sylvester Dodd), Jadyn Wong (Happy Quinn), Eddie Kaye Thomas (Toby Curtis), Katharine McPhee (Paige Dineen), Robert Patrick (Agent Cabe Gallo), and Elyes Gabel (Walter O’Brien).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the events in O’Brien’s life which served as the basis of the show’s premise; the producers’ enthusiasm for the project and their fascination with O’Brien; the challenge of casting the fictional version of O’Brien for “Scorpion”; the nature of the show’s dialogue, which includes a great deal of technical jargon as well as a pervasive emotional disconnect; the show’s “complex” storyline and character relationships due to the main characters’ extreme intelligence; the show’s action scenes and stunt work; the use of Los Angeles as the show’s setting; and how much of the plot of the show is based on realistic situations.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the cast meeting the real-life people who inspired their characters and how it colored their performances; the show’s “fun-cedural” format and story structure; statistics involving people who are “mentally enabled,” such as O’Brien and the characters on the show; and how O’Brien uses the show as a means of raising awareness about “mentally enabled” individuals.
