GALE STORM SHOW, THE {A.K.A. OH! SUSANNA}: CAPRI (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about Susanna Pomeroy, the mischievous social director of the Ocean Queen cruise ship. In this episode, as the ship prepares to dock in glamorous Capri, Nugie comes down with a sudden backache, which the ship's doctor diagnoses as "psychosomatic." He suggests to Susanna that she is intimidated by the city's romantic reputation and prescribes some "love and affection," and Susanna schemes to fix her up with an eligible man. Upon learning from musician Antonio that Capri men are primarily interested in beautiful and/or wealthy women, she selects two local "fortune hunters," Vittorio and Sebastian, both of whom declare that the other is the "the worst kind" of gold-digger, and casually tells them about her very rich but down-to-earth friend. Both men are intrigued and immediately begin to flatter Nugie with attention, and her backache miraculously disappears as she agrees to dates with both of them that evening.

Antonio and Susanna serenade the happy trio with a fitting tune, "Isle of Capri," though Susanna is flustered when both Sebastian and Vittorio propose to Nugie and begin to fight with one another over her. She attempts to distract them by pretending to be an even wealthier bachelorette herself, and when Captain Huxley telephones, she feigns a high-stakes business call in front of the suitors. The two men begin fighting over Susanna instead, and Nugie takes offense when she catches her friend seemingly "stealing" her beaux. Huxley arrives, confused by the phone call, and spills the beans about Susanna's trick, prompting both Vittorio and Sebastian to declare their dislike of "phonies," though Nugie is amused when Susanna explains her scheme. Vittorio and Sebastian then inform Susanna that they both still love her despite her lack of wealth and begin to formally duel over her, though Huxley soon intervenes and tells a shocked Susanna that the scene was staged to "cure her meddling" – though the two rivals continue to fight, having remembered that they hate one another anyway. Back aboard the ship, Susanna employs Nugie's method for evading trouble when she is scolded by Huxley. Commercials deleted.
