NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, THE: WHITE LIKE ME (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about a divorced mother, Christine Campbell, trying to juggle the needs of her job, young son, and ex-husband. In this episode, Christine arrives at the empty gym and learns that Barb has given an interview about the business to a magazine geared at black women. Though she doubts that it will garner any real publicity, she soon discovers that they have many new members – all of whom are black. She nervously declares that she "doesn't see color" and is unfazed by the change, and she recruits Matthew and Richard to help with Ritchie's busy schedule now that she is swamped with work. Richard and Matthew object to the idea that they are "dumb dad" stereotypes who cannot handle her instructions, though soon realize that they have mistaken the day on which they are to pick Ritchie up.

Barb notices Christine hiding in her office and Christine tries to explain that the gym now has a different "vibe" before anxiously blurting out her fear that she is a latent racist. Barb assures her that she is not, however, and that everyone feels uncomfortable when surrounded by people of a different race or culture, as she herself often is in predominantly white establishments. They decide to integrate the gym and Christine heads off in search of more white members, while elsewhere Richard and Matthew realize that they have indeed forgotten Christine's instructions and have no idea where to find Ritchie. Christine then apologizes for sending them on "a wild goose chase," however, admitting that she herself mixed up the days, and they are able to cover their mistake – mostly. Christine entices some new members with a special bargain, but she then finds that the gym is now all white, as the black women objected to the seemingly special pricing for the white people. However, Barb and Christine agree that they are "heroes" anyway because of their biracial sham marriage. Commercials deleted.
