CRISTELA: MOVIN' ON UP {SERIES FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The finale of this comedy series about a young Mexican-American woman working as an intern at a law firm.

Maddie, Josh, and Cristela all check the results of their bar exams: Maddie and Cristela pass, but Josh does not. Cristela goes home to find Daniela and Natalia with a cake in order to celebrate, and they have a party with the family. Felix is especially excited at the prospect of Cristela moving into her own place, although Henry and Isabella wish that she would stay. Cristela does not wish to talk about it, believing that she might be able to contribute to the household now that Daniela has lost her job. However, Daniela states that she may have found a better job and that Cristela shouldn’t worry about her. Cristela comes to work in an excellent mood but finds that Josh’s desk is empty. Trent tells Maddie and Cristela that Josh failing the bar and Maddie passing has put him at something of an impasse as to who to grant the new attorney position. He goes to his office to deliberate on the decision. Maddie and Cristela get into an argument; Maddie believes that she will get the job as a foregone conclusion, but Cristela believes that if she does it will be due to her father and not from any merit of her own.

Cristela finds a note from Josh explaining that he is moving back home, and she rushes out to try to stop him. She finds him in the midst of packing up his things, calling him a “coward” for abandoning his dream of becoming a lawyer. He says he made a deal with his parents and cannot stay unless he has a paying job, and that he cannot find work as a paralegal. Cristela thanks him for introducing her to Ben, but Josh becomes upset and cannot say why. Cristela leaves, but not before he promises to keep in touch and says it was nice to know her. She leaves, and he criticizes himself aloud for not admitting his feelings for her. Meanwhile, Henry, Isabella, and Daniela tell Felix that they do not appreciate his smug attitude about the possibility of Cristela leaving. Even Natalia admits that despite her outwardly angry attitude, she too will miss Cristela.

Later, Felix and Cristela sit down together and he tells her that he doesn’t mind having her stay. She is surprised by this, and he explains that he does not want everyone to be miserable after she leaves. This discussion causes her to have an epiphany about her relationship with Josh. Cristela returns to work and Trent tells her that he has awarded her the attorney position. Cristela is beside herself with happiness, and Maddie congratulates her. She attempts to bring Josh in as her new assistant, but Trent instead brings in Maddie to fill that role. However, Maddie refuses the position, taking Cristela’s advice to heart and hoping to earn her way into another position. Trent calls Josh a “quitter” and believes he would not want to work for Cristela, but Josh appears and explains that he wants to get the chance to be the next in line for an associate position, and that he has “unfinished business.” Trent accepts this explanation and authorizes Josh for the position, although Maddie continually mocks Josh for his failure to pass the bar exam. Cristela comes home to tell Daniela the good news, but Daniela tells Cristela that she is moving out of the house, feeling that she can take care of herself now. She also discovers that Daniela intends to have Cristela move out with Natalia, although Cristela does not approve of this plan. Includes commercials.
