PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: AN EVENING WITH SCHITT'S CREEK {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars and screenings presented by The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This seminar honors “Schitt’s Creek,” the comedy series about an extravagantly wealthy family forced to relocate to an eccentric small-town motel after a financial disaster.
Rene Reyes (director of programs, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing the episode “Jazzagals,” screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits of episode, see ACCNUM 125887). Brad Schwartz, president of the Pop Network, also offers comments.
Jarrett Wieselman (entertainment editor, Buzzfeed) moderates the following panelists: executive producers, creators, and cast members Daniel Levy (David Rose) and Eugene Levy (Johnny Rose); and cast members Emily Hampshire (Stevie Budd), Catherine O’Hara (Moira Rose), Annie Murphy (Alexis Rose), and Jennifer Robertson (Jocelyn Schitt).
The panelists touch on such topics as: the original idea for the show, based on previous television portrayals of “riches to rags” stories; how Eugene and Daniel Levy feel about working with each other; O’Hara’s initial trepidation to committing to the series and how she influenced the development of her character; Eugene Levy and O’Hara’s long working relationship; a plotline revolving around the relationship between Daniel Levy and Hampshire’s characters; and how the panelists envision the show’s characters evolving slowly over time.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: influences on Murphy’s character; the conceptual origins of the main characters’ names; the town where the show is filmed; issues surrounding the name of the show, which is a homonym for an expletive; the involvement of cast members Chris Elliott (Roland Schitt) and John Hemphill (Bob Currie); and the cast’s occasional utilization of improvisation.
Also includes a clip package featuring excerpts from the show and clips of interviews with the cast on various other television programs, as well as a “5 minute catch up” composed of footage from the first season of “Schitt’s Creek.”
