OUTLANDER: CASTLE LEOCH (TV)

Summary

One in this series of fantasy dramas, based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, about a World War II nurse caught up in romance and danger after she is magically transported to the 18th century. In this episode, Claire arrives at Castle Leoch – not yet the ruin she recently explored with Frank – and meets the no-nonsense Mrs. Fitz, who provides her with herbal remedies to treat Jamie's gunshot wound. Once alone, Claire discovers Jamie's extensive scarring and learns that he was held prisoner and repeatedly flogged by none other than "Black Jack" Randall, who also assaulted his younger sister, Jenny. Disturbed by his tale, Claire wonders how Frank is handling her inexplicable disappearance back in the 20th century, and when Jamie asks, she can only state that her husband is "not alive." He comforts her, though warns her that the castle residents will be suspicious of her English roots. In the morning, Mrs. Fitz is baffled by her strange "corset" and provides her with more appropriate attire, and Claire soon learns that the year is 1743. She relies on her historical knowledge of the time when she is questioned by Colum, disabled leader of the MacKenzie clan, and she quickly invents a tale to explain her sudden appearance in the woods. Colum, doubtful that "an officer and a gentleman" like Black Jack would assault her so brazenly, tells her that she can secure a ride back to Inverness in five days' time.

Claire tries to assimilate to her strange new world, stating that she is of French descent and is journeying to stay with distant relatives in Compiegne, though she makes a faux pas when she mistakes Colum's son Hamish for Dougal's heir. She finds Jamie at the stables and changes his bandages, and he reveals that there is a price on his head for murder, though declares himself innocent of the charges and muses that he has decided to trust her despite the obvious dangers to himself. Claire is then annoyed to find that Dougal has assigned one of his men, Rupert, to follow her, and when she demands an explanation, Dougal bluntly states that he suspects her of being an English spy.

Out in the woods, Claire meets Geillis Duncan, who shares her interest in horticulture and is suspected of being "a witch" as a result. Claire soon diagnoses Colum with Toulouse-Lautrec syndrome – a degenerative disease named for the French artist who, of course, has not yet been born – and watches with Geillis as the clan leaders pass judgement on several local disputes. A man accuses his daughter of "loose behavior" and demands a punishment, and Claire is shocked when Jamie, still injured, offers to take a beating from Rupert in the girl's place. She tends to him afterwards, and he explains that he will recover from the violence more easily than would the girl – who is Mrs. Fitz's granddaughter – and noting that the shame would have had a long-term effect on her. Jamie seems disappointed to learn that Claire intends to depart Castle Leoch on the following day, but when she makes her final preparations to depart, she is summoned by Colum, who informs her that she is now the clan's healer – and their prisoner.
