HULLABALOO {LESLIE UGGAMS, PETER AND GORDON, BARRY McGUIRE, SHARGRI-LAS, McCOYS} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of musical/variety programs spotlighting pop music performers. This episode begins with the Hullabaloo dancers performing the opening number, and host Leslie Uggams greets the audience and introduces the guest stars: the rock group The McCoys, duo Peter and Gordon, girl group The Shangri-Las, and singer Barry McGuire. Uggams sings an upbeat version of “I Could Have Danced All Night” from “My Fair Lady” accompanied by the Hullabaloo dancers, followed by a brief excerpt from a song she performed on “Sing Along With Mitch” starring Mitch Miller. She then introduces The Shangri-Las, who sing “Long Live Our Love.” Uggams sings a few bars of “Mr. Tambourine Man” and then brings out Barry McGuire, who sings the spiritual “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” along with the tambourine-toting Hullabaloo dancers. Peter and Gordon take the stage to sing “Woman,” accompanying themselves on guitars, after which they join Uggams for “You Are My Sunshine.”
Uggams and McGuire team up for a duet medley of Roger Miller songs, including “England Swings”; “In the Summertime”; “Do-Wacka-Do”; “You Can’t Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd”; “Chug-a-Lug”; “Engine, Engine Number Nine” and “King of the Road.” Uggams then sings a few lines of the classic “Fever” and introduces the McCoys, who perform the complete song for the “Hullabaloo-a-go-go” segment, accompanied by the dancers. Uggams then bids the audience good night and previews upcoming episodes and stars as the McCoys close out the evening with more music and dancing. Includes commercials.
