TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {BURT REYNOLDS, RAY PRICE, RENEE HALL} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are coin musician Renee Hall, actor Burt Reynolds and singer Ray Price. In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: Andy Rooney's recent semi-apology for some inappropriate comments; Bob Hope's sale of his expansive California properties; another proposed raise in stamp prices; Tammy Fake Bakker's amusing comments about her "expertise" with cosmetics; the retirement of the extremely fast Lockhed SR-71 Blackbird aircraft; the famous "rudeness" of New Yorkers; and recent modernizations in Moscow. Next, Carson chats with co-host Ed McMahon about McMahon's recent birthday and their longtime friendship; and Carson examines a number of racy romance novels and "The Romance Writers' Phrase Book." In a segment called "You Are the Author," he reads a number of funny quotes from a satirical romance story written by a viewer.

The first guest, Hall, joins Carson onstage and discusses her struggles with weight; her decision to drive two hours to Carson's studio from northern California rather than flying; her family of entertainers; and her various mishaps and accidents during her own careers as an acrobat. She then describes her musical "coins," which are large flattened metal pieces with jagged edges that "play" specific notes when struck against a surface, though she notes that she only "approaches the melody" in her renditions. She then plays "Around the World" and "The Bells of St. Mary," though encounters complications when she realizes that her coins are placed out of formation, and when the table collapses at the end of her routine.

Reynolds then takes the stage and discusses his absence from the tabloids since his marriage; his return to California after living in Florida; his experience attending parties and overhearing some outrageous Hollywood gossip; his friendship with former barber Perry Como; his friendship with Ricardo Montalban and their various films and shows together; and other celebrities' desire to avoid recognition when dining out, contrasted with his desire to be noticed. He then shows a clip of a home movie featuring his his wife Loni Anderson and 18-month-old son Quinton exploring their home garden. He explains that he is not "stern" like his own father, recounting a story of a harsh punishment from his dad for "sassing" his mother.

Finally, Price takes the stage and sings "For the Good Times," and then sits down with Carson and briefly chats about his son's interest in singing and his ranch in east Texas. Carson then closes the show by previewing the following night's guests. Includes commercials and promos.
