PEYTON PLACE {JOE DIES AFTER FIGHT WITH RODNEY} (TV)

Summary

One in this nighttime serial drama about the residents of a New England town, based on the novel by Grace Metalious. In this episode, young Kim witnesses Joe Chernak and Rodney Harrington having a violent fight on the wharf. Rodney pushes Joe hard, and though he at first seems fine, he then collapses. Rodney calls the hospital from a pay phone, but Betty, on the other end, recognizes his voice. Rodney frets over Joe and realizes that he is dead, and he flees as two fisherman approach and find the body. At the hospital, Steven notices Betty's nervousness, but she declines to explain as they leave together for dinner. Constance and Elliot arrive at the Schuster home, and Doris tells Constance that she hopes their husbands can be on the "same side of the fence" after the changes at the newspaper. Downstairs, they toast to Carson's new position. At Ada's tavern, Stella drinks alone, and when they hear sirens nearby, Ada and Rita investigate outside and are shocked to see Joe's body being taken away. Ada gently breaks the news to Stella, who runs out to see her brother.

Dr. Rossi chats with Mrs. Chernak, who says her children are doing well, and Steven and Betty drive towards the party, somewhat late. Betty apologizes for being distracted and not "with it," and he accuses her of dwelling on Rodney and letting him get between them, comparing him to a ghost. Ada urges Stella to talk about her brother, saying that the police will surely question her, but Stella is still shocked and says she feels nothing. Ada explains that she does not want Rita to be dragged into the case, and Stella protests that she knows nothing, only that Joe was angry earlier that evening when he left the house. She says that he was a "rotten kid" who caused trouble, but then admits that he was vulnerable as well and breaks down in grief. Rita calls Dr. Rossi at the Schuster's and explains that Stella needs his help, though she declines to give details, and he leaves the party just as Steven and Betty arrive. Elsewhere, Rodney broods at Samuel Harrington's grave, regretful over his actions. Commercials deleted.
