STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE: THE SEARCH {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of science fiction programs about a twenty-fourth-century space station, Deep Space Nine. Part one of two. The episode begins as the crew of Deep Space Nine struggle to devise a suitable defense against the Jem’Hadar. A ship de-cloaks close to the station: it turns out to be the U.S.S. Defiant, a new Starfleet ship piloted by Sisko, intended as a secret weapon against the Dominion. Sisko explains that it is Starfleet’s first true warship, originally designed to defeat the Borg but not put into mass-production due to the waning urgency of the Borg threat and some design flaws in the ship’s engine. Their mission is to take the Defiant to the Gamma Quadrant, find the mysterious Founders who rule the Dominion, and attempt to negotiate a settlement with them. The Defiant is equipped with a Romulan cloaking device, to be operated by Romulan Subcommander T’Rul as part of an agreement with the Romulan government. Sisko also introduces Lieutenant Commander Michael Eddington of Starfleet security. Odo perceives that Eddington is to replace him as security chief of Deep Space Nine and is indignant. Sisko is unhappy with the order to replace Odo but this is of little comfort to Odo. The decision was made because of recent security breaches aboard the station and due to Starfleet’s discomfort with Odo’s status as a shapeshifter. Odo says he will resign before he can be replaced. Major Kira attempts to comfort and support Odo. Meanwhile, Sisko convinces Quark to join the mission to the Gamma Quadrant due to his brokering of the trade agreement with the Karemma, which could give Sisko an edge in negotiations with the Founders. The next morning the crew prepares the Defiant for launch. They detect Odo as he sneaks aboard and Sisko allows him to remain there. The Defiant is launched and sets out for the Gamma Quadrant. Odo is forced to share quarters on the Defiant with Quark, which displeases both of them immensely. Once in the Gamma Quadrant, the Defiant cloaks but is nearly detected by a pair of passing Jem’Hadar vessels. They arrive at the Karemmar homeworld, where Quark attempts to extract the location of the Founders from the Karemmar representative, Ornithar. Ornithar is reluctant to give his assistance until Quark threatens to dissolve the trade agreement between the Ferengi and the Karemmar. Ornithar reveals the location of a relay station where most communications directed to the Founders are sent. Odo is fascinated by a celestial formation on the star map, the “Omarian Nebula.” Quark elects to return to the Alpha Quadrant. Kira and Sisko debate about Starfleet’s decision to replace Odo. Sisko is not happy with the decision but sees some logic behind it; Odo is not considered a “team player.” Dax and O’Brien are sent down to the relay station, where they discover where the communications to the Founders are being sent. Just as they relay the coordinates to the Defiant, an alarm is sounded and a shield comes up over the relay station, preventing the Defiant from beaming them out. Several Jem’Hadar ships approach and Sisko reluctantly gives the order to leave Dax and O’Brien behind so the Defiant can escape. Odo sequesters himself in his quarters and Kira tries to talk to him. He feels compelled to visit the Omarian Nebula, feeling drawn to it ever since they entered the Gamma Quadrant. He cannot explain why. The Jem’Hadar ships locate the Defiant and open fire. The Defiant de-cloaks and engages in combat, managing to destroy one ship before being overwhelmed. Jem’Hadar soldiers board the Defiant and attack the crew; Kira is knocked unconscious in the process. When she regains consciousness she is sitting beside Odo in a shuttlecraft. He managed to bring her to safety in the attack. The Defiant is left adrift in space. Odo brings her to the Omarian Nebula, where they discover a rogue Class M planet. They land and discover a vast sea of quicksilver-like material. The episode ends as other shapeshifters like Odo emerge from the sea; one of them approaches and tells him: “welcome home.” Continues with B:50222. Commercials deleted.
