CAGNEY & LACEY {CAGNEY AND LACEY}: WHO SAYS IT'S FAIR {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas about two policewomen, Chris Cagney and Mary Beth Lacey.
Continued from B:60771. Lacey admits to Lt. Samuels that she has breast cancer. He asks her to take some time off but she wants to continue working. She tells Cagney that her mastectomy has been scheduled; Cagney asks her to get a second opinion but Lacey wants to get the whole business over with as quickly as possible. Eleanor visits the police station, angry at Cagney and Lacey because Kevin got taken away to juvenile hall by social services. One of the key factors in this decision was Cagney and Lacey's police report, which led to Eleanor being branded an "unfit mother." They talk to a representative at social services who is convinced that Eleanor is a child abuser, and they seem unable to dissuade her.
Lacey, feeling guilty that her report contributed to Kevin being taken away, and believes that if they can get Kevin to give them information as to the whereabouts of other drug dealers, he could receive leniency and be reunited with his mother. Lacey finally tells her children that she has breast cancer, assuring them that she isn't going to die. Cagney and Lacey interrogate Corelli again but learn only that Willie hasn't been seen since Cagney last encountered him. Samuels again tries to get Lacey to take time off and she refuses, snapping at him in the middle of the squad room. With all eyes on her, she loudly announces to everyone there that she has breast cancer, asking everyone to leave her alone about it.
Cagney and Lacey manage to convince Eleanor to let Kevin give them information on the other drug dealers. The three of them visit Kevin in juvenile hall, and Eleanor gets him to cooperate. He claims he only ran drugs because they needed money, but Eleanor says they didn't need "that kind of money." He admits that he was aware of the contents of the packages he delivered. Using the information he provides, Cagney and Lacey spend hours tracking down the leader of the drug ring, eventually cornering him in an apartment. A gunfight ensues and Lacey chases the dealer down the fire escape and into an alley, where she takes him down and arrests him. Cagney is upset at Lacey for her apparent disregard of her own safety, asking her to consider the feelings of those who care about her.
Lacey finally decides to take Cagney's advice and seek out a second opinion about her cancer. The second doctor disagrees with the first one, explaining that they can perform a lumpectomy instead of a mastectomy, and that the treatments and recovery will be less severe than originally anticipated. He further explains that other doctors do not necessarily know about lumpectomies and that in most places they are not legally required to inform patients of alternate treatments, noting that it is fortunate that Lacey caught the problem as early as she did. She schedules a lumpectomy for the following morning, leaving Cagney to go into court to resolve the Taggart case alone. Before the hearing, Cagney has to physically restrain Eleanor when the state lawyer prevents her from seeing Kevin. Alone, she talks to Eleanor, who thinks Cagney looks down on her and really believes she is an unfit mother. She has an emotional breakdown, pleading for her son to be reunited with her.
The trial commences and Cagney takes the stand. She testifies that her initial suspicions of child abuse were incorrect and that she believes Eleanor is doing the best job possible in caring for Kevin given the circumstances. She maintains that it would be wrong to separate Kevin from his mother. Samuels visits Lacey the night before her operation. She apologizes to him for yelling at him in the squad room. The next morning, Cagney visits Lacey, somewhat disoriented from her sedatives. She tells her that Eleanor has been given custody of Kevin and that social services intends to help her care for him. Lacey's operation is a success and she is expected to recover. The episode ends as Lacey wakes up with Cagney beside her. Commercials deleted.
