ONCE AND AGAIN: WAKE UP, LITTLE SUSIE {SEASON TWO PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The second season premiere in this dramatic series about Rick Sammler and Lily Manning, two middle-aged parents who deal with the realities of divorce while they cope with raising their children and dating. The format of this series combines a traditional story line with revealing soliloquies by some of the main characters. In this episode, the kids prepare to head back to school, with Jessie nervous about her first day as a freshman. Having been apart for a month, Lily and Rick make plans to get together late that night after the kids are asleep, interrupted by co-workers Christie and David. At school, Grace pretends not to know Jessie and encounters Carla, a tough girl who recently left rehab. Later, after their date, Rick says good night to Lily and she puts her daughters to bed, but he waits outside in his car and returns to her house once "the coast is clear," and they share a romantic night on the couch. In the morning, however, they realize that they have slept too late and Rick hurriedly tries to escape the house without being spotted by Grace and Zoe, but he is busted when he runs into Jake at the door.
Lily tries to explain the situation to her daughters, but Grace seems disinterested. Discussing the matter over the phone, Rick tells Lily that they kids had to find out eventually, and they make plans for him to stay over again later in the week. Karen calls Rick and asks if he will pick Jessie up from school, and he says that he will "handle it," agreeing when Lily offers to get her along with Grace. At school, Grace invites a lost-looking Jessie to sit with her at lunch as her friends discuss the challenges of living with their dads. Lily takes all three girls back to her office after school, where they meet Christie, and Jessie later frets to Eli that Grace does not like her, wondering if their parents will soon move in together. Rick and Lily, however, seem pleased that their children are apparently bonding. Karen confronts Rick and asks why he did not tell her about Lily picking up Jessie, saying that she wants to be clear with the kids and avoid "possible misunderstandings." At school, Carla talks casually about her parents' many marriages and invites Grace out for the night, but at home, Lily tells her that Rick and Jessie are coming over for dinner and that she too must be there.
Jessie shares her worries about Grace with Rick, and dinner is a somewhat awkward affair, though Zoe seems happy to have Jessie there. When the girls play Monopoly after dinner, however, Grace and Zoe soon descend into an argument about the game and an uncomfortable Jessie asks to go home. Grace refuses to discuss the matter with Lily, and she is surprised the next day to hear from Rick that Jessie believes that Grace dislikes her, but they agree that they are "both doing the best they can" in bringing their families together. Jessie pesters a distracted Eli for help with her homework, and when Rick talks to her, she finally explains that she is struggling with the divorce and having to deal with three houses and a new school where she feels ignored. Rick explains that he has been lonely since separating from Karen, but promises Jessie that being her dad is still extremely important to him. Later, at school, Jessie and Grace greet each other in the hall, suggesting that they are building a friendship after all. Includes commercials and promos.
