MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE: ANYONE WHO HATES KIDS AND DOGS {FIFTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The fifth season finale in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.

In this episode, Ted has some "publicity shots" taken, and when Mary returns from lunch, Ted, Lou, and Murray size up her date, Ken Albert, with whom she may be getting serious. At home, Mary nervously meets Ken's son Stevie for the first time and is taken aback when he proves standoffish and rather bratty. Mary's male co-workers soon notice her discomfort and attempt to reassure her, even recruiting Sue Ann to give her some womanly comfort.

Sue Ann advises Mary to befriend Stevie in order to "snare" Ken, and Mary awkwardly attempts to bond with the youngster by chatting about Wonder Woman, to no avail. She finally confides in Lou about Ken's "blind spot" regarding his son, and Lou urges her to practice being blunt and saying something negative about another person. At Stevie's surprise birthday party, when put on the spot, Mary is forced to admit that she doesn't really like Stevie — much to the outrage of Ken's former in-laws, who are in attendance. Ken halfheartedly defends her and Mary suffers through the rest of the party. Back at the office, Lou seems to take some of Mary's "negative" comments to heart. Commercials deleted.
