MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, THE: SOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS ARE RHODA (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about Mary Richards, a single career woman working in a television newsroom.
In this episode, Mary gets into a minor car accident and ends up befriending the woman who rear-ended her. Joanne offers to pay for the repairs directly, admitting that her insurance rates have gone up after several similar accidents. When Rhoda stops by to tell Mary about the damage to her car, she notices that the two new pals have a lot in common. At work, Lou is annoyed when Mary takes several personal phone calls from her friends, and Mary is forced to turn down Rhoda's lunch offer when Joanne asks her first.
She heads to Joanne's fancy country club for a somewhat inexpert game of tennis and mentions that the car repairs came to $110; Joanne promises to give her a check. Phyllis arrives and takes a liking to the elegant Joanne, clearly feeling that she is a better friend for Mary than the free-spirited Rhoda. She offers the two of them tickets to the symphony. Rhoda soon joins them, believing that she and Mary had plans to buy new tires. Her jealousy begins to show when Mary admits that she is again going out with Joanne instead.
Later, Mary turns down another of Rhoda's lunch offers, explaining that she has to show a guest of Lou's around the network. Joanne stops by and, after fending off Ted's flirtation, invites Mary out to lunch. Mary ends up accepting when Lou returns to the office early and assures Mary that he will handle the tour himself. Rhoda, naturally, calls back and learns from Murray that Mary has seemingly lied to her. Later, when one of their would-be doubles partners cancels at the last minute, Mary suggests inviting Rhoda along to Joanne's country club as a replacement. Joanne awkwardly suggests that Phyllis would make a better choice.
Mary quickly realizes that Joanne is uncomfortable with Rhoda's Judaism. Joanne hurriedly protests that she is "not a bigot" and simply does not know any Jewish people socially. Mary opts out of the game and firmly requests the belated check for the car repairs. Later, she visits Rhoda and tries to make amends. Rhoda makes it clear that the matter is already forgotten.
