SHUIHU ZHUAN: DAOBA CHUI YANGLIU {OUTLAWS IN THE
MARSH: YANKING UP A WILLOW TREE} {PART 4}
{MANDARIN CHINESE} (TV)
Summary
The second of two programs on this tape. Part four of
forty-three in this television adaptation of the classic
Chinese novel, "Outlaws in the Marsh," written by Shi
Naian in the late-1300s. This adaptation closely
follows the novel, which tells the story of how a group
known as the 108 Outlaws from Shuihu come together
and rebel against the Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279).
Part four continues to focus on Lu Da, who is to become
one of the 108 Outlaws later in the series, and
introduces another major character named Lin Chong,
who is also to become one of the 108 Outlaws later in
the series.
Part four begins with Lu Da arriving in Dongjing
(Eastern Capitol) and going to eat in a local
restaurant. Lu Da and the other patrons are soon kicked
out by bodyguards of Gao Yanei (son of Defense Secretary
Gao Qui who was introduced in part one), who doesn’t
want to eat with the commoners. Afterwards, Gao and
his bodyguards go to the local market to play cricket
fighting.
Next, the scene shifts to introduce Lin Chong, who is
the capitol’s head military instructor under Gao Qui’s
supervision, and his happy home life with his young and
beautiful wife. Lin Chong also has a good friend named
Lu Qian, who also works for Gao Qui. Next, the scene
shifts back to Lu Da, who has arrived at the Daxiang
National Monastery. However, its head monk Zhiqing
doesn’t want to admit him as a regular monk due to Lu
Da’s bad reputation in his former monastery. After a few
days, Lu Da is finally placed to take care of the
vegetable gardens behind the main monastery area and
isolated from everyone else, so he won’t get into
trouble with the other monks. After a few days, some
local street punks who have been stealing vegetables
come to pick a fight with Lu Da, but Lu Da easily wins
the fight and the street punks treat Lu Da as their new
leader. A few days later, Lu Da is drinking and talking
with the street punks, and yanks up a big willow tree
with his bare hands to show his mighty strength. This
incident is also witnessed by Lin Chong, who is at the
monastery with his wife to pray for an offspring.
Afterwards, Lin Chong and Lu Da engage in a friendly
martial fight, ending with the two men becoming fast
friends. Meanwhile, Lin Chong’s pretty wife is assaulted
by Gao Yanei, who also happens to be at the monastery on
that day. When Lin Chong hears of this assault from
their maid named Jiner, he quickly goes to stop Gao
Yanei, who escapes hastily. Gao Yanei returns home and
forms a plan with his close bodyguards to rape Lin
Chong's wife in the near future. He enlists the help of
Lin Chong's good friend, Lu Qian, who initially doesn’t
want to do be a part of the scheme, but is pressured to
agree at the end of the conversation. A few days later,
Lu Qian invites Lin Chong to a restaurant to drink, then
some hours later a bodyguard of Gao's lures Lin Chong's
wife into a different restaurant saying that her husband
is drunk. Part four ends with Lin Chong's wife entering
the restaurant and Gao Yanei just about to rape her.
