TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {BURT REYNOLDS; PETER FALK; VIKKI CARR; ALBERT BROOKS; DR. MELVIN ANCHELL} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's guests for this program are actor Burt Reynolds, singer Vikki Carr, actor Peter Falk, comedian Albert Brooks, and author/sex researcher Dr. Melvin Anchell.

In his opening monologue, Carson touches on the following topics, among others: the NBC lot's veteran security guard; announcer Ed McMahon's upcoming nightclub act at the St. Regis hotel in New York; the new fall television series, including the mixed-religion-marriage comedy "Bridget Loves Bernie"; New York Mayor John Lindsay's claims of noise reduction in the city; and a "Tonight Show" writer's plans to name his unborn child after his beloved boss.

Reynolds makes a surprise appearance and gifts Carson with a slightly edited version of his famous nude photo from the April 1972 issue of Cosmopolitan, about which Carson has made many jokes, admitting that he did not expect such a big public reaction to the pin-up shot. Reynolds also discusses his upcoming appearance on "The Flip Wilson Show," taped in the same building as Carson's; the Paris premiere of his new picture "Deliverance" (1972) and praise for co-stars Jon Voight and Ned Beatty; his recent stay in Arkansas to film "White Lightning" (1973) and his experience shooting four films in a row; why he opts to live in Jupiter, Florida and "commute" to Hollywood; and his funny experiences with bashful male fans.

Next, Carr sings "Se Acabo," which she translates as "It's All Over," from her new album "En Español," and then chats with Carson about her own "centerfold" shot in the album's packaging; why she translates her Spanish-language lyrics for American audiences; memories of her first professional appearance as a child singer at a "strip joint," including her great apprehension about her large family's attendance at one of her shows; and assorted reactions to her involvement in a milk advertising campaign. Carr also performs "Grande, Grande, Grande."

Falk then joins Carson for a somewhat disjointed chat about his unusual Emmy Award acceptance speech in May; "Columbo's" move from Wednesday to Sunday nights; his love of his character's iconic "crummy-looking coat"; his friendships with the "madcap" John Cassavetes and Ben Gazzara; and his mounting exasperation with repeated questions about why viewers relate to his lovable and hard-working detective character. A clip from the season two "Columbo" premiere, "Étude in Black," is also shown.

Next, Brooks tells a long story about why he "had to go insane" recently, thanks to his purchase of a used German car that he cannot afford to repair. He then declares that he is "going out of business" and addresses the camera directly as he "does a commercial for himself," imploring fans to hire him for in-person comedy performances, as the challenges and expenses of performing publicly have become untenable.

Finally, Dr. Anchell, author of "Sex and Sanity," takes the stage and addresses the inaccurate claim that he is "the Barry Goldwater of sex"; his thoughts on the sexual revolution and why "the freedom to have emissions" is not emotionally satisfactory; the intersection of the reproductive and emotional instincts in human sexual behavior; why premarital sex in particular should not be "taken lightly"; the importance of commitment and emotional connection between partners; and why he disapproves of co-ed living. Includes commercials and promos.
