SIMPSONS, THE: HOMR (TV)

Summary

One in this animated comedy series about the Simpsons—Homer and Marge and their children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. In this episode, the family attends an animation festival, and Bart is impressed by a display of Japanese cartoons, although Lisa is less so. Flanders and his sons watch a disturbing religious claymation program, and as the children attend an unsatisfactory panel with a derivative voice actor, Marge and Homer watch an old “Itchy and Scratchy” cartoon complete with highly un-P.C. cigarette ad. Later, they attend a panel on motion capture, and Homer volunteers, entertaining the crowd with his antics as an animated dog. At work, he tells Lenny and Carl about the experience, saying it is the next big thing, and hurries off to take out his entire life savings from the bank and then buys five hundred shares of the Animotion company. It soon declares “super-duper bankruptcy,” however, and Homer is forced to admit to the family that he has lost all of their money. At Moe’s, Barney suggests that Homer make money as a medical guinea pig, and he agrees and subjects himself to a number of painful tests. The scientists are taken aback at his low intelligence and soon discover a crayon lodged in his brain, relic of his childhood antics, and they offer to remove it.

Homer returns home with greatly increased intelligence, much to Lisa’s delight, and she makes him her library buddy. Homer soon pursues other intellectual hobbies, including motivational speaking, telling schoolchildren that “it’s cool to be smart.” He then writes to Mr. Burns about some defects in the power plant, and this leads to everyone being laid off as the plant is brought up to code. Everyone grows angry with Homer for ruining their lives and they burn him in effigy at Moe’s, and Homer sadly wonders why Lisa did not warn him of the social perils of intelligence. He tries to forget his troubles at the movies, but the audience grows angry when he points out the stupidity of the plot, and in desperation he returns to the scientists for help. They recommend an “unlicensed surgeon,” who turns out to be Moe, and Moe reinserts the crayon into Homer’s brain and restores him to his normal idiocy. Lisa is saddened at the loss of her new smart dad, but she discovers that he wrote her a note before the procedure saying that his time as a brainiac showed him just how special she is, and she is touched.
