SIX FEET UNDER: THE INVISIBLE WOMAN (TV)

Summary

One in this series about the Fisher clan, a loving -- if dysfunctional -- family struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy in the face of the stressful day-to-day operations of the eccentric family business, a funeral home in Los Angeles. In this episode, one Emily Previn chokes to death alone in her home and is not found for a week. Brenda states that she intends to write a novel, though Nate is somewhat doubtful, as she often quickly abandons new projects. Claire frets about the upcoming SATs, though Parker is more interested in her list of attractive teachers, explaining that her mother's "life coach" has helped her prepare for the test. David explains that Emily "buried herself" and planned her own funeral in advance, and Gary pushes Claire to continue becoming more "involved" in her own life despite her anxieties. Ruth is upset to hear that Emily apparently had no one in her life who cared about her, though Claire defends her solitary existence as a valid choice. David goes on a successful date with a cute lawyer, Ben, though he lies to him about his profession. Keith struggles to care for Taylor, realizing that his new role as "parent" is negatively affecting his relationship with Eddie.

Ruth begins to imagine herself in Emily's place, and Brenda suffers writer's block and calls her prostitute client, Melissa, for lunch. Rico worries that he will not be able to suitably prepare Emily for an open casket viewing due to her advanced decomposition, and Claire is outraged to find that Parker has hired someone else to take the SATs for her. Brenda tells Melissa that she feels "kind of separate" from Nate at the moment, and though she is highly impressed by Melissa's self-confidence, Melissa tells her that prostitution is "just a way to pay the bills." Keith confides in his partner about Eddie, but they suddenly encounter a couple having a violent argument and Keith is forced to shoot the man dead. Ruth, Nate and David visit Emily's house to pick out her burial clothes, as requested, and Ruth wonders if the woman was truly happy with her lonely life. While on their second date, David blurts out the truth about his job to Ben, admitting that he was afraid of "repulsing" him, but Ben seems unfazed. Parker tells Claire her mother opted to hire the other girl to ensure a high score, but Claire angrily rejects her and Parker retorts that she plans to seduce Gary.

David is delighted with his success with Ben, but Keith suddenly arrives in a state of shock and explains about the shooting, and the two end up in bed together. Rico admits that he was unable to fulfill Emily's wishes, but Nate tells him that no one is coming to the funeral anyway. In the morning, Keith tells David that their dalliance was a mistake, as he is still with Eddie, and sadly ends their friendship. When Melissa's "watcher" suddenly cancels on her, Brenda accompanies her to a voyeuristic encounter with a "client." Gary assures a furious Claire that nothing has happened with Parker and reminds her to focus on bettering herself rather than on other people's problems, though she is surprised when he also acknowledges sexual tension between the two of them. Nate has an indulgent fantasy involving Emily's chosen funeral song, and Ruth summons Rico and her children to the service, determined that the woman should be properly mourned. Father Jack gives a eulogy and hints that David "taught him about himself," and Ruth informs the family that she does not want to become Emily and requires more "intimacy" from the three of them, though they seem unsure about how to proceed. Later, Nate is stunned when Brenda declares that she does not want to lose him and abruptly proposes to him with her grandfather's ring, and he happily accepts. Ruth, however, seems heartbroken by the fractured state of her family.
