FRIENDS: THE ONE WHERE RACHEL TELLS... (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about six Generation-X friends who live together in New York City and share a favorite haunt, a coffee bar called Central Perk. In this episode, Monica and Chandler prepare to depart on their honeymoon, and Rachel stops by to wish them well and tell the others that she plans to tell “the father” about her pregnancy. They tell her that they know it is Ross, and celebrate that they will all be aunts and uncles, although no one so much as Monica, as she points out. Rachel asks for advice on breaking the news to Ross, but they are all at a loss. After they leave, Phoebe realizes she left her guitar in their apartment, but neither she nor Joey have keys. Joey calls the super, Mr. Treeger, and claims that he smells a gas leak. They are somewhat surprised, however, when he brings a fireman to hack down the door.

Ross stops by, and Phoebe and Joey tell him to find Rachel, as she has something important to tell him. He admits to them that they shared a night together about a month ago and theorizes that she wants to rekindle their relationship, although Phoebe and Joey suggest it may be something else. At the airport, Monica and Chandler spot another couple who are promoted to first class because of their honeymoon. Monica is annoyed when they do not receive the same treatment, and they unsuccessfully try to sneak into the first-class lounge. Later, at the hotel, the same couple manages to score the honeymoon suite, and Monica protests. The woman says that they can have it and she’s just happy to spend time with her new husband, but Chandler states that he and Monica “need the stuff.”

Rachel comes to Ross’ apartment to tell him the news, and, misunderstanding, he attempts to let her down gently. Confused, she informs him that she is pregnant, which stuns him, as they used protection. He is shocked to learn that contraceptives are not 100% effective, and unconvincingly tells her that he is not panicked about her pregnancy, but is rather “indignant as a consumer.” Later, he tells Joey and Phoebe what happened, and they pretend to be shocked by the “brand-new information.” Joey calls Monica and tells her about the imaginary gas leak, and she authorizes him to break down the door, but he just causes further damage to her kitchen.

At the doctor’s office, Rachel prepares for her check-up and Ross bursts in, apologizing for his panic earlier and promising to be there for her and the baby. He suggests that they should get married, but she says they are not in love and don’t need to, and they argue about whether or not she could raise the baby on her own. When the doctor comes in and shows her the baby on the sonogram, however, they stop bickering and share an emotional moment as they see their child for the first time—except Rachel tearfully admits that she cannot see the tiny fetus. Ross points it out to her, and they hold hands. Later, they show the image to their friends, and they celebrate until Rachel admits she “lost it again,” and Ross helps. Commercials deleted.
