I'M WITH HER: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The pilot of this comedy series about a schoolteacher’s relationship with a famous movie star. At a Hollywood movie premiere, famous movie star Alex Young arrives with her date, a man unknown to the various paparazzi. The man is Patrick Owen, an unassuming high school English teacher who has a chance encounter with Alex the week before. He is out with his friend, fellow teacher Steve Johannson, when they spot Alex walking her dog, much to Steve’s excitement. As he tries to talk to her, the dog attacks Patrick, and Alex manages to get the dog to stand down. She apologizes profusely for the incident, but Patrick feels it was no big deal. She gives Patrick her phone number and offers to pay for any medical bills he might incur for the incident. Steve keeps trying to get Patrick to call her and ask her out, believing that there was some attraction between the two of them. However, Patrick dismisses the idea and simply wants to keep teaching his class as he normally would. Meanwhile, Alex returns home to her disaffected younger sister Cheri, who is annoyed that Alex gave their number to a “civilian” like Patrick, who is not in the movie business like her. Alex finds Patrick’s number and calls him to check up on him, but he is in the bathroom and Steve picks up instead, pretending to be Patrick. He has a short conversation with her and asks her out for coffee on Patrick’s behalf. Steve informs Patrick and he is astounded by this turn of events. Patrick and Alex meet over coffee and chat; she laments that she is not able to do more “artistic” work, such as playing a part in a small stage play, because people in her industry believe it would be an unwise career choice. Patrick advises her to do it anyway since it makes her happy, revealing that he dropped out of law school against his father’s wishes in order to become a teacher, a job from which he derives great satisfaction. He is pleasantly surprised that Alex proves to be much more down-to-earth than he imagined she would be. They go to a driving range together for a while, and Alex invites him to accompany her to a big film premiere that Friday, and Patrick accepts. However, Patrick and Steve see photos of him with Alex in a magazine the next day, and soon Patrick is the center of an immense amount of attention. His students constantly badger him about his budding relationship, and he is pestered by photographers to the point where he hits one, forcing him to serve a two-hour stint in a police holding cell. This proves to be too much for Patrick, who declares that his relationship with Alex is over. Alex visits Patrick while he’s mentoring Brian, one of his students, individually. He explains to her that he can’t go with her to the premiere; he feels that he’s simply an ordinary schoolteacher and doesn’t belong in the same place as a famous movie star like her. She replies that she likes the fact that he’s not pretentious and has real responsibilities in his work, but Patrick can’t take being in the public eye and she understands. She leaves, noting that she decided to take the part in the play as per Patrick’s advice. Brian mocks Patrick for not having the courage to pursue her. Patrick changes his mind and runs after her, much to Alex’s delight. The episode ends with the two of them on the red carpet at her movie premiere, surrounded by photographers. Includes commercials.
