PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: MEDIA AS ENTERTAINMENT: THE NEXT GENERATION: GREEK IS THE WORD {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's Media as Entertainment events. Held at The Paley Center in Los Angeles, this evening honors "Greek," a drama series about a brother and sister whose lives become complicated after joining Greek-lettered "clubs" at prestigious Cyprus-Rhodes University. Creator and co-executive producer Patrick Sean Smith introduces the "Greek" episode "Move On.Cartwrights," which is then screened in its entirety. (For episode synopsis and credits, see "Greek: Move On.Cartwrights," ACCNUM 100677.)

After the screening, moderator Craig Tomashoff (executive editor, TV Guide) introduces the panelists: Smith; executive producer Lloyd Segan; and cast members Tiffany Dupont (Frannie), Clark Duke (Dale Kettlewell), Dilshad Vadsaria (Rebecca Logan), Paul James (Calvin Owens), Amber Stevens (Ashleigh Howard), Jake McDorman (Evan Chambers), Scott Michael Foster (Cappie), Jacob Zachar (Rusty Cartwright), and Spencer Grammer (Casey Cartwright).

The panelists touch on such topics as: the genesis of the series; if cast members were "cool" in school; if the characters are based on people from Smith's past; why Smith insisted that the fraternity experiences of gay character Calvin not be negative; how Smith conducted his cast auditions; the degree to which the actors researched their roles; how long it took for a rapport to develop among the cast; if the characters' story arcs evolved or were always set in stone; feedback from fraternities and sororities to the show; the manner in which scripts "have a moral tone but don't preach to viewers"; if Smith has achieved his initial goals for the show; why the setting for the program was switched from the South to the Midwest; and if the morally questionable actions of characters were an issue at ABC Family network.

Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: pranks which cast members play on each other; the appeal of being part of an ensemble cast; future plot developments; why the character of Cappie doesn't have a full name; the challenge of juggling multiple storylines; ways in which humor is inserted into scripts; and if the first season will end with a cliffhanger.
