PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: MEDIA AS ENTERTAINMENT: MAKE NO BONES ABOUT IT {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in this series of seminars conducted by The Paley Center for Media which celebrate media as entertainment. Held at the Paley Center in Los Angeles, and moderated by Ray Richmond, Hollywood Reporter columnist, this seminar celebrates "Bones," a drama series loosely based on the life of forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs about the crime-solving prowess of forensic anthropologist Temperance "Bones" Brennan and FBI agent Seeley Booth. Barbara Dixon, director of The Paley Center in Los Angeles, offers opening comments before bringing Richmond to the stage.
After telling about the show's background, Richmond introduces the panelists: executive producer/creator Hart Hanson; executive producer Stephen Nathan; and cast members Tamara Taylor (Camille Saroyan); John Francis Daley (Lance Sweets); Eric Millegan (Zack Addy); Michaela Conlin (Angela Montenegro); David Boreanaz (Seeley Booth); and Emily Deschanel (Temperance "Bones" Brennan.) T.J. Thyne (Jack Hodgins) was scheduled to appear but was unable to attend.
Panelists touch on such topics as: if the "C.S.I." franchise paved the way for the program; why cast and crew take pride in "not being a number one show"; how much input Reichs has in the scripts; if the basis for the banter between Deschanel and Boreanaz is based in their off-screen dynamic; if Boreanaz is still recognized as Angel from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"; the effects on cast members of constantly talking about gruesome deaths; what it was like for Taylor to join the show in season two, after the ensemble was already established; if Daley stays in touch with "Freaks and Geeks" co-star Seth Rogen and producer Judd Apatow; the cast's experiences with Ryan O'Neal when he was a guest star on the show; the writers' future plans for the characters; and how the program developed a "cult following."
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics: the process for making the "rotting corpses"; if censors have asked producers to cut back on gore; whether cast members participate in the show's Internet message board; why Boreanaz and Deschanel became co-executive producers; if Boreanaz will direct episodes, as he did on "Angel"; and if the characters played by Boreanaz and Deschanel will resolve their sexual tension.
Finally, Hanson introduces the "Bones" episode "The Baby in the Bough," which is screened in its entirety. (For episode synopsis and credits, see: "Bones: The Baby in the Bough," ACCNUM 100644.)
