PUSHING DAISIES: THE FUN IN FUNERAL (TV)
Summary
One in this fantasy-based dramedy series about a pie-maker whose touch can revive the dead. In this episode, nine-year-old Ned experiments with the “grace period” for which he can bring a body back to life without causing consequences. Back in the present, Olive becomes jealous when she sees Ned kissing Chuck, though they use a sheet of plastic wrap to keep from actually touching. She then strikes up a conversation with a customer, traveling salesman Alfredo Aldarisio. Later, Olive and Emerson agree on their dislike of Chuck, though both pretend otherwise. In bringing a new case to Ned, Emerson objects to Chuck’s inclusion in the group. At the coroner’s office, Ned sees the body of corrupt funeral director Lawrence Schatz, who died after Ned let Chuck live. Under pressure from Emerson, Ned tells Chuck what he did. Back at The Pie Hole, Aldredo offers a homeopathic cure for Olive’s unhappiness. Meanwhile, Emerson tells Chuck that Lawrence’s twin brother Louis hired him to find out who killed his sibling. Ned refuses to touch Lawrence and bring him back to life, at least until Chuck intercedes on Emerson’s behalf. At the funeral parlor, the trio meets Louis. He soon tells Chuck of having heard that Vivian and Lily had an “emotional relapse.” The rumor is true, as the sisters became depressed after getting the postcard that Chuck sent them while on the cruise. Louis says that he’s sure that Lawrence was murdered, as death threats surfaced following newspaper accounts of Lawrence stealing valuables from corpses. Louis fears that he could be the killer’s next victim. When Ned revives the former funeral director, Lawrence says that Louis was in on the thefts. Then, Lawrence admits to taking the pocketwatch with which Chuck was buried. When she snatches the watch back, the coffin lid slams shut and Ned zaps Lawrence back into the hereafter with only seconds to spare. Later, Emerson says he’ll find the treasure that Louis stole and take it for himself, despite Chuck’s objections. When Chuck gets depressed over her aunts’ setback, Alfredo offers her a bottle of his tonic. She takes a sample pack, then puts the tonic in a pie she bakes for Vivian and Lily. Olive volunteers to deliver the pie to Chuck’s aunts, not realizing that Louis’s corpse is now in the shop’s freezer. Soon, Ned finds Louis’s body. In Couer d’Couers, Olive delivers the pie to Vivian and Lily, then shares it with them. She suddenly realizes that Chuck is their niece. At The Pie Hole, Emerson tells Ned that someone has set him up for Louis’s murder – just as the police arrive. Chuck and Ned help a revived Louis get into Emerson’s car. He tells them that he died when choking on a piece of cow’s tongue when confronted by an angry customer. Having read much of the hate mail sent to the funeral home, Chuck realizes that Wilfred Woodruff tried to frame Ned for Louis’s death. The trio brings Louis’s body back to the funeral home, where Ned finds Wilfred hiding among the corpses. The two engage in a swordfight, during which Wilfred admits to killing Louis. He also says he saw Ned fleeing after Lawrence’s death, thus putting Louis in Ned’s freezer in retribution. Wilfred is knocked out in the ensuing struggle, after which Ned and Chuck find the cache of stolen artifacts. Olive mulls her next move in an effort to expose Chuck. Finally, Wilfred is arrested and Chuck returns the family heirlooms to their rightful owners. Includes commercials.
