BIENVENIDOS A AMERICA {KOSOFSKY ETHNIC RADIO
COLLECTION -- SPANISH} {TAPE 1 OF 2} (RADIO)
Summary
Tape one of two. One in this series of weekly
Spanish-language talk shows with a mission to inform,
direct, and defend Latin American immigrants. It is
hosted by journalist Mario Sol and attorney Jose
Pertierra, an immigration specialist. The two start off
by referring to the theme of this special edition,
agriculture and immigration activist Cesar Chaves. They
move on to a brief discussion of the program's guest,
Dolores Huerta, who worked with Chaves on the
establishment of the United Farm Workers and was his
confidante. The program moves on to a presentation of
immigration news of the week by Pertierra before
returning to a phone interview with Huerta. The news
includes: a new law on immigration; the shooting of
Amadou Diallo; a suit being brought against the
Immigration and Naturalization Service by eight elderly
Latinos who were refused citizenship because they could
not speak English, even though they were mentally unable
to do so; an attempt to educate the Arizona police about
immigrants' rights, in order to avoid future violations
of those rights; and the arrest of several corrupt INS
inspectors by the FBI. Pertierra finishes his report by
citing a study of all federal institutions that gave the
INS the lowest grade. The hosts then move on to give a
short history of the United Farm Workers, established in
California in 1962, and the group's efforts in fighting
for the social protection of farmers, many of whom are
immigrants. They note that the union has participated
in several strikes, particularly the famous 1965 "Strike
of the Grapes." Listeners are invited to call the
program with questions about immigration issues or any
other questions for the guest. Questions include
queries about the process of becoming an American
citizen or a permanent resident, or about receiving a
work permit. Other situations brought up are
deportation and how to obtain a waiver for it, and the
effect of committing crimes of any type on one's chances
of gaining legal status in the United States. Lawyer
Jose Pertierra offers answers to all questions. He
often encourages the listeners to take advantage of the
upcoming election and appeal to their local congressmen
for support. The program offers one musical interlude,
the Cuban bolero tune "Absence," performed by Willy
Chirimo and Lisette. The two hosts welcome callers
warmly and share impressions and jokes about the
callers' Latin American countries of origin, trying to
paint the picture of Latin America as one big family.
Finally, the two hosts remind the listeners of the
severity of U.S. immigration laws and the importance of
staying informed and fighting fear. Includes promos.
