BIENVENIDOS A AMERICA {TAPE 1 OF 2} {KOSOFSKY
ETHNIC RADIO COLLECTION -- SPANISH} (RADIO)
Summary
Tape one of two. One in this series of weekly
Spanish-language talk shows with a mission to inform,
direct, and defend Latin American immigrants. It is
hosted by journalist Mario Sol and attorney Jose
Pertierra, an immigration specialist. The two start off
by referring to the theme of this edition, the paucity
of Latin-American medical services for the
Latin-American immigrant community. They state that
there is only one Latin-American doctor for each 5000
Latin-American immigrants in the United States as the
community is discouraged from practicing medicine. The
hosts move on to introduce Dr. Orlando Castillo, the
founder of the Consortium of Latin-American Doctors of
California, an organization that dedicates itself to
helping Latino immigrants who have degrees in medicine,
nursing, or related fields to qualify to practice in the
United States by training them to pass any required
tests. Listeners are invited to call the program, and
this organization, with any questions on this issue as
well as any other immigration-related questions.
Questions brought up cover the process of becoming an
American citizen or a permanent resident; immigrants
from San Salvador and Guatemala are particularly
interested in information about the Nacara Law. Other
situations brought up are deportation and how to obtain
a waiver for it, and the effect of committing crimes of
any type on one's chances of gaining legal status in the
United States. Lawyer Jose Pertierra offers answers to
all questions. He often encourages the listeners to
appeal to their local congressmen for support. The
program offers a bit of music as well -- the Mexican
songs "The Last Glass" and "Return, Return," both
performed by Chavela Vargas. The two hosts welcome
callers warmly and share impressions and jokes about
the callers' Latin American countries of origin, trying
to paint the picture of Latin America as one big family.
Finally, the two hosts remind the listeners of the
severity of U.S. immigration laws and the importance of
staying informed and fighting fear. Includes promos.
