HINDENBURG DISASTER, PT. 8 (RADIO)
Summary
Part eight of coverage of the explosion and fire aboard the airship Hindenburg that took thirty-six lives. Bob Brown interviews Herb Morrison of station WLS (Chicago) who went to Lakehurst, New Jersey, to make a routine recording of the Hindenburg's May 6, 1937 landing. As Morrison was describing the descent, the airship exploded and his horror-stricken account was recorded. When NBC executives heard the recording they broke their rigid rule against the broadcasting of recorded programs and allowed Morrison's eyewitness account to be aired during this May 7, 1937 interview. This marks the first use of a now standard technique -- the "delayed" report. The recording is played. (The material contained on the isolated recording itself is cataloged as "Hindenburg Disaster (Disk Recording)" and available as R77:0064.)
