KIM HOWARD INTERVIEWS JOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO IN
TORONTO (RADIO)
Summary
This 1969 radio excerpt features an interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Highlights include the following: Ono contends that she and Lennon share a sense of telepathy regarding their ideas; the couple discuss the concept of "bagism," claiming to have developed it in an Amsterdam hotel, but are unwilling to divulge its specific tenets; they explain the secret of their successful marriage, in an age when belief in traditional marriage seems to be waning; Lennon contends that marriage is a "nice ritual"; Ono asserts her belief that people try to split them up "subconciously"; the pair bemoan the dearth of rock musicians participating in the peace movement; Lennon talks about how often he sees the other Beatles; the couple share their views on cruelty to animals. Also, Lennon muses on his overcoat made from human hair; the current skinhead movement in England; the remote chance that The Beatles will tour again; his belief that if The Beatles did tour, the hysteria of the original "Beatlemania" would resume; and Ringo Starr's acting career. In addition, the opinionated Mop Top expresses his belief that "anyone who is anyone went through the acid trip"; offers a defense of the positive contributions of the youth movement; asserts his opinion that the Woodstock festival was important in spreading the message of peace; denies that the violence at the Altamont Festival is indicative of the spirit of the '60s youth; speaks about the spread of the American Black Panther movement to England; offers positive opinions about black activist Dick Gregory; catalogs the different instruments The Beatles used on "Abbey Road"; and offers his belief that The Beatles need to "freak out" a little more on their future albums. The interviewer then mentions that a friend of his thought that The Beatles' bizarre ten-minute dada sound collage "Revolution 9" was so titled in reference to a macrobiotic diet that is identified with the number nine. John and Yoko -- who are coincidentally on the same diet -- are happily surprised by the connection they had never made themselves. The program concludes as Yoko admits that "I'm getting all static about that one." Commercials deleted.
