TEXTRON THEATRE, THE {THE HELEN HAYES THEATRE}: ARROWSMITH (RADIO)
Summary
One in this series of programs featuring adaptations of popular and literary classics, starring and executive produced by Helen Hayes. This installment presents an adaptation of the Sinclair Lewis novel "Arrowsmith," a story about a doctor and his self-sacrificing wife. The play opens with the first meeting between Martin, a medical student, and Leora, a nurse. They fall in love almost immediately, Leora entranced with a man so passionate about his laboratory research, and Martin enamored of such an understanding woman who supports him wholeheartedly. After they marry, Martin gives up his dreams of laboratory research and takes on work in private practice and with the Health Department in order to support his wife. However, he soon becomes disillusioned with his work and colleagues, and Leora schemes to get him back to the lab work he loves. Martin returns to do research with his old mentor and comes upon an important discovery. But because of the politics in the world of science, Martin is forced to take his work to a small West Indian island. Leora insists on joining him, saying she has no life outside of him. The trip brings about about life-and-death changes to both Leora and Martin, as well as to the world around them. Includes commercials and promos.
(Series title and network varies. Sporadically from 1935 through 1949, "The Helen Hayes Theatre," starring and executive produced by Helen Hayes, was broadcast on various networks and under a variety of sponsors. "The Textron Theatre" was one of its many variations.)
