METROPOLITAN OPERA BROADCASTS: LA TRAVIATA,
ACT II (RADIO)

Summary

Continued from R86:1020. Part two of three of the the historic January 5, 1935 Saturday Afternoon Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast with Rosa Ponselle, Frederick Jagel, and Lawrence Tibbett, conducted by Ettore Panizza. One in this series of performances by the Metropolitan Opera. In this program, the Metropolitan Opera performs "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi. In Act II, Alfredo's father, Germont, is visiting Violetta. While he thinks highly of her, he is worried that the scandal of her illicit relationship with his son may endanger his daughter's impending marriage, and he asks Violetta to leave Alfredo. Stunned, Violetta refuses. But Germont hints that someday his son will tire of her, and in the duet "Pura siccome un angelo" she reluctantly agrees they must part. Germont leaves and Violetta writes a letter accepting Flora's invitation, and begins a farewell note to Alfredo. Unaware of his father's visit, Alfredo returns and is confused by Violetta's tears and hasty exit as she sings "Amani, Alfredo." Just as the footman hands Alfredo her farewell letter, his father reappears to console his son. But Alfredo reads Flora's invitation and jealously suspects that Violetta has taken another lover. As Act II concludes, he rushes off to Paris for revenge. Continues with R86:1022.
