UFO INCIDENT, THE (TV)
Summary
This docudrama portrays events allegedly witnessed by Barney and Betty Hill in a case of double amnesia and possible alien abduction in the fall of 1961. Based on transcripts of hypnosis sessions, the program begins as Betty and Bernard Hill try to uncover the source of their memory loss and nightmares. Upon visiting Dr. Simon, who provides biographical sketches of the couple in voice-over, the Hills recall events in flashbacks, including signs of lost time, Barney's scuffed shoes, and the compass indicating their car had absorbed radiation. The Hills tell the psychiatrist that, soon after that bewildering night, the couple griped uncharacteristically, coming to terms with their interracial marriage in the process. Under hypnosis, Barney recounts an argument with Betty about an object in the sky, and recalls his insurmountable fear, leading to his emotional outburst under hypnosis. In flashback, Barney experiences confusion and denial upon seeing an entity who communicates telepathically, and his mind creates changing ideas of the creature. And as Betty undergoes hypnosis, her mind is a blank -- but when Dr. Simon presses her, she breaks into hysterics.
Betty breaks down under hypnosis as she recalls the approaching creatures. Unaware of the events they are recounting under hypnosis, the Hills feel curiously refreshed after therapy sessions. Then, under hypnosis, Betty explains that she is not supposed to remember the abduction, and describes the leader of the bald-pated creatures, who says they must run tests. In flashback, the Hills enter a loading dock and a corridor, and Betty is subjected to an exam that includes skin scrapings. Dr. Simon notices correlations between the Hills' stories and suspects that Betty's nightmares may have influenced her husband's. Under hypnosis, Betty draws the star map she saw on the ship. And, in flashback, Betty promises the aliens she will remember everything, despite the fact they are erasing her memory. Dr. Simon ponders the similarities between the Hills' stories and consults a general about UFOs: Simon suspects the Hills witnessed an object that provoked a fantasy representing their inner struggles.
