Summary
One in this long-running, western drama series about widower Ben Cartwright, his sons, and their adventures on their ranch in Nevada's Ponderosa. In this episode, Joe and the Cartwrights' ranch hand, Candy, become outraged by the atrocities committed by the order of wealthy landowner Calvin Butler. The landowner and his men harass and intimidate homesteaders by setting fire to their property, chasing settlers off their valuable land and seizing control of their assets. With the help of the unscrupulous Sheriff Daniels, Butler has paralyzed the residents of Butlerville in a state of collective fear. But Joe and Candy agree to take action when Candy's old sweetheart, Barbara, and her husband, Jess, are targeted as victims. Jess has witnessed a fire that Butler and his men started and that killed a woman and her child, but Jess fears that Butler will murder him before he can report the crime to the authorities. Joe confronts Butler, who says that with no evidence and only an accusation, no court could possibly convict him of arson or murder. As a result, Joe and Candy must protect their friends and find some means of halting Butler's oppressive tactics. Commercials deleted.
