Summary
One in this series of early morning programs, featuring interviews, special features, and news. This tape consists solely of the first hour of a two-hour broadcast. This episode begins just after South Korean dissident Kim Dae Jung arrived back in his homeland of Korea and was immediately put under house arrest. Hosts Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley briefly discuss the situation. At the news desk, John Palmer reports further on the incident before Lloyd Dobbins, reporting from Seoul, discusses Kim's arrival that morning, rife with demonstrators, supporters, and police action. Palmer also reports on fatalities in an apartment building collapse in Southern Italy; the Pentagon's investigation of Vice-Admiral Joseph Metcalf, who commanded the U.S. invasion of Grenada, but was only cautioned after bringing Soviet-made weapons back to the United States; Senate Republicans' proposed one-year elimination of the cost-of-living increase for Social Security pensioners; and attempts by salvage workers in Palm Beach, Florida to refloat a grounded tanker. Then, Robert Hager in Washington, D.C., reports on a new AIDS test. Palmer further reports on the rising life expectancy in the United States. After Willard Scott checks in with the weather report, the "Close Up" segment features Gumbel speaking with Congressman Edward Feighan and former Undersecretary of State Patt Derian about the Kim Dae Jung situation. They touch on such topics as: what occurred when they landed in Seoul with Kim; whether either of them were punched by South Korean security officers; why the South Korean military initiated the fighting; White House reports that claim no violence occurred; and what they hope the American reaction will be to these events. Then, Pauley sits down with Marcia McBroom Landess and Dana McBroom Manno to discuss the problems facing their mother, Marie McBroom, an American women charged with illegally trafficking oil in Nigeria, and threatened with a possible death sentence. They discuss whether they feel their mother will be found innocent at a tribunal; the "irony" of their mother's charge; Landess being the iconic image of Lux beauty soap throughout Africa; and men claiming to be from the Nigerian Security Organization trying to extort money from Landess. Next, Kim joins Gumbel via phone, touching on such issues as: what he expects President Ronald Reagan's reaction to be to the day's events; whether he regrets his decision to return to Seoul; and whether he fears for his life. Then, Gumbel, Pauley, and Scott discuss which celebrities they feel are the best commercial endorsers in light of a recent survey. At the news desk, Palmer recaps the Kim Dae Jung story and reports on the collapsed apartment building in Italy He then reports on the following: hopes by officials from Australia and the United States that New Zealand reconsider its anti-nuclear policies,; and a rally by New York City policemen for a colleague charged with manslaughter. After Scott offers another quick weather report, Pauley sits down with NBC's chief financial correspondent Mike Jensen to discuss the federal budget and the state of the union, as well as forecasts for the economic future. Next, in a pre-taped segment, Gumbel sits down with "The Great One" Jackie Gleason to discuss such topics as: his work on "Life of Riley"; how he made his characters so believable; honing his craft; how "The Honeymooners" was conceived; the work of which he's most proud -- the 1962 film "Gigot"; whether he ever got credit for being both a funnyman and an accomplished actor; his Academy Award nomination for "The Hustler"; and never receiving an Emmy Award. Then, Pauley talks to the stars of "Heaven Help Us," Kevin Dillon and Andrew McCarthy, who touch on such topics as: how McCarthy got cast in the teen comedy "Class" alongside sex symbol Jacqueline Bisset; Dillon's older brother Matt Dillon; how Dillon was discovered; and whether the two actors are Catholic, like the characters they play in the movie. Back in the studio, Gumbel briefly talks about a proposed golf outing with Gleason. The tape ends abruptly. Includes commercials.
