PRISONER, THE: ARRIVAL {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere of this series of dramas about a man who finds himself imprisoned in a quaint yet menacing resort village, where futuristic technology keeps him under constant surveillance and makes escape seem impossible. In the premiere, the man, played by Patrick McGoohan, arrives at "the Village," learns of his mysterious captors, and attempts to escape. In a high-tech surveillance room, a man named Number Two quizzes him about his "resignation," but the prisoner -- designated "Number Six" -- refuses to cooperate. He receives a tour of the Village, a private maid, and a mechanized bungalow equipped with lava lamps and incessant music. Number Six attempts to escape on foot, but he is tracked down and apprehended by an enormous floating balloon known as "Rover." Upon awakening in the village hospital, he discovers an old friend named Cobb. They compare notes on their experiences in the Village and discuss methods of escape, but soon after Cobb kills himself. At the funeral, a sobbing woman tells Number Six that she and Cobb were working on an escape plan when he died. Although he suspects that she could be working for his captors, Number Six accepts her assistance in a daring scheme to flee by helicopter. Commercials deleted.
