
EVENING AT POPS: FIEDLER'S GREATEST HITS {RETROSPECTIVE} (TV)
Summary
This series retrospective includes numerous clips from past performances by dozens of guest stars who have appeared with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops. In interview footage, Fiedler shares his thoughts on the orchestra's extensive repertoire, which includes country, folk, jazz, Broadway, and classical music, and talks about his decision to conduct popular music, joining the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and how he would like to be remembered. Included are the following musical highlights: Fielder conducts the orchestra in performances of "Cabaret," "Oklahoma!," "On the Trail," "The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," the tango piece "Jalousie," "Those Were the Days," "Auld Lang Syne" (New Year's Eve 1977), an audience sing-a-long to "You're a Grand Old Flag," and patriotic songs by John Philip Sousa; Robert Merrill sings "If I Were a Rich Man" from "Fiddler on the Roof"; Ben Vereen performs a song-and-dance routine; Henry Mancini plays "Moon River"; Ray Bolger leads the audience in sing-a-long to "Once in Love with Amy"; Ethel Merman sings "They Say That Falling in Love Is Wonderful" and "There's No Business Like Show Business" (both songs from "Annie Get Your Gun"); John Hartford plays the guitar and sings "Gentle on My Mind"; Boots Randolph plays "Yakety Sax"; Glen Campbell sings "Rhinestone Cowboy"; The Carpenters perform "Top of the World"; Roy Clark plays the fiddle song "The Orange Blossom Special"; tenor Richard Tucker sings "Pagliacci"; Ella Fitzgerald sings "'S Wonderful"; pianist George Shearing plays a special arrangement of "What Kind of Fool Am I?"; Roberta Flack sings "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"; Peggy Lee sings "I've Got a Crush on You"; and members of the Boston Ballet dance to a song from the early 20th century. Also performing are guitar player Chet Atkins, pianist Ana-Marie Vera, violinist Lilit Gampel, the classical guitar quartet The Romeros, soprano Eileen Farrell, trumpeter Doc Severinsen, Peter Schickele ("PDQ Bach"), flamenco dancer Jose Greco (to Ravel's "Bolero"), clarinetist Benny Goodman, pianist Dave Brubeck and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, Lionel Hampton, soprano Roberta Peters, legendary ragtime pianist and composer Eubie Blake, pianists Roger Williams and Earl Wild, and harmonica player Richard Hayman. Also included are appearances by Tony Randall, singer Pearl Bailey, television chef Julia Child, Steve Allen and Louis Nye, and Leroy Anderson, who trades places with Fiedler in a performance of a novelty piece.
