JOHN CALLAWAY INTERVIEWS {DECADE AND YEAR-END SPECIAL} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of interview programs hosted by John
Callaway. In this decade-end special, Callaway
discusses the passing of the 1970s with a panel
comprised of the following members: Linda Witt of
People Magazine; Ruth Adams, editor of the Bulletin of
Atomic Scientists; Jim Hoge, editor-in-chief of the
Chicago Sun Times; author Eugene Kennedy; and broadcast
journalist Warner Saunders. Callaway and the panel
discuss the following topics, among others: striking
images of America in the 1970s, including images of
Vietnam and the Space Shuttle; whether the 1970s was
an essentially narcissistic time or a period of
preparation for selflessness and sacrifice; the
spiritual coming of age of the "Baby Boom" generation;
the politically revolutionary tenor of the decade; the
repercussions and lessons of the Vietnam war; the
symbolic clock used to measure the imminence of
nuclear war; the energy crisis as it relates to
disparities between First and Third World nations; the
economic prognosis for the 1980s; signs of hope for the
future; the specter of nuclear proliferation in the
Third World; the increased threat of terrorist
activities; the changing nature of news media; the
constancy of human nature; the Iranian hostage
situation, and its effects, positive and negative, on
American consciousness; the death of Chicago mayor
Richard J. Daley, and predictions about Chicago's
political future; the ambiguous state of race relations
in the 1970s; the growing prominence of Latinos as a
rights-seeking minority group; the necessity of
rehabilitating politics; and the state of women's
issues, such as status in the workplace, as the 1970s
come to an end.
