CAROL BURNETT SHOW, THE {DAVID FROST, MARILYN HORNE, EILEEN FARRELL} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy/variety programs starring Carol Burnett. This program, a special telecast from New York, features as special guests David Frost and the opera singers Eileen Farrell and Marilyn Horne. The program opens with a performance by Farrell of the aria "Oh, mio babbino caro" from Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi," and a medley consisting of "Those Great Big City Blues" and "Swanee," accompanied by the Ernest Flatt Dancers. In the program's first sketch, Burnett and Harvey Korman play a loud, vulgar American couple trying to buy a Rolls Royce from a polished, genteel British salesman played by Frost. Next, Marilyn Horne, one year after her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, sings "Una voce poco fa" from Rossini's "The Barber of Seville." Burnett, Horne, and Farrell then perform a three-part-harmony version of Stephen Sondheim's "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" from the current Broadway hit "Company." Following this, Korman portrays a henpecked husband who fantasizes about being a Roman gladiator to Vicki Lawrence's seductive empress -- until Korman's aggravating wife infiltrates his daydream. In the program's final sketch, Frost is the narrator for the Italian operatic spoof "Chinderella," with Burnett as the title character, Horne and Farrell as her wicked stepsisters, Korman as her fairy godfather, and Waggoner as the prince. Commercials deleted. This is a black-and-white copy of a color telecast.

Cataloging of this program has been made possible by the Bell Atlantic Foundation, 1999.
