ANNIE GET YOUR GUN {MARY MARTIN AND JOHN RAITT} (TV)
Summary
A special television presentation of Irving Berlin's classic musical based on the true story of female sharpshooter Annie Oakley (1860-1926), starring Mary Martin as Annie and John Raitt as Frank Butler. Featuring such musical highlights as "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly," "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun," "There's No Business Like Show Business," "I Got the Sun in the Morning," "They Say It's Wonderful," and "Anything You Can Do," the musical traces Annie's life from her poor beginnings as an illiterate hillbilly whose sole talent is her skillful shooting, to her rise to stardom in "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" and her turbulent relationship with fellow sharpshooter Frank Butler. As the story begins, Annie and her siblings have come to a town to trade game that Annie has shot, and "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" is playing in the same town. As a promotional stunt, the show's manager, Charlie Davenport, challenges the county sharpshooting champion to a match with the show's star marksman, Frank Butler. Annie winds up competing against Butler, and Buffalo Bill Cody asks her to join the show as Butler's assistant, which causes tension between Annie and Butler's previous assistant, Dolly Tate. However, Annie gladly joins the show to be near Butler, hoping that he will grow to love her. While Frank and Annie try to work out their relationship, which is strained by Frank's jealously over her shooting ability, "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show" struggles to compete with "Pawnee Bill's Far East Show." The shows attract the attention of Sitting Bull, the famed Indian chief, who develops a special relationship with Annie and tries to help her win Frank. Commercials deleted.
