AMERICAN SHORT STORY, THE: WILLA CATHER'S "PAUL'S CASE" (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramatized American short stories. Series host Henry Fonda introduces this adaptation of Willa Cather's "Paul's Case." Set in Pittsburgh at the turn of the century, the story concerns the demise of a sensitive, disturbed high school boy whose dreams for a life of beauty and culture range far beyond his means and the borders of his provincial community. After being expelled from school for disciplinary problems, seventeen-year-old Paul is forced by his father to stop frequenting symphony halls and playhouses and accept a stultifying job with a local firm. When his boss asks Paul to deposit $2,000 of the company's funds in the bank, the young man absconds to Manhattan with the money, and briefly enjoys the affluent, refined lifestyle he has always desired. As the search for young man and the misappropriated funds intensifies, an anxious Paul begins to feel trapped once more. Following this presentation, Henry Fonda comments on Willa Cather's life and literary themes which archival film footage of the the author is presented.
