FOURTH ANNUAL AMERICAN COMEDY AWARDS, THE (TV)

Summary

One in a series of annual awards programs celebrating outstanding achievements in the comedy industry. Performers and presenters on this fourth annual American Comedy Awards special include: Bob Saget, Harry Anderson, Jerry Seinfeld, Judy Tenutta, Alan Thicke, Beatrice Arthur, Dudley Moore, Henry Winkler, Jimmy Tingle, Christina Applegate, Victoria Jackson, Gilbert Gottfried, Valerie Harper, David Leisure, Kirk Cameron, Alex Rocco, Howie Mandel, Beau Bridges, Linda Ellerbee, Tom Arnold, and Roseanne Barr.

Categories and winners include: Male Lead in a Television Series, John Goodman ("Roseanne"); Female Comedy Club Stand-Up Performer, Rita Rudner; Male Comedy Club Stand-Up Performer, Jeff Foxworthy; Female Performer in a Television Special, Carol Burnett ("Julie & Carol Together Again"); Male Lifetime Achievement Award, Art Carney; Female Lifetime Achievement Award, Betty White; Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, Rick Moranis ("Parenthood"); Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, Julie Kavner ("New York Stories"); Supporting Male in a Television Series, Dana Carvey ("Saturday Night Live"); Supporting Female in a Television Series, Julie Kavner ("The Tracey Ullman Show"); Female Lead in a Television Series, Tracey Ullman ("The Tracey Ullman Show"); and Female Lead in a Motion Picture, Meg Ryan ("When Harry Met Sally").

The program also features clips of some of the outrageous happenings that have occurred on the show in the last four years; clips from such shows as "Laugh-In," "Saturday Night Live," and "Not Necessarily the News" are shown to demonstrate how local evening news anchors are spoofed; the Lifetime Creative Achievement Award goes to creator/writer/producer/director Garry Marshall. To honor Marshall, clips from his television work are shown, including "Happy Days," "Mork & Mindy," "Laverne & Shirley," "The Odd Couple," and "The Dick Van Dyke Show"; brief clips from his successful motion pictures "The Flamingo Kid," "Nothing in Common," "Beaches," and "Young Doctors in Love" are also shown; and Pam Dawber, Ron Howard, his sister Penny Marshall, Robin Williams, and Carl Reiner are on hand to pay tribute to Marshall. Includes commercials. This program is closed-captioned.
